Miami East FFA named No. 1 in student development
COLUMBUS, Ohio —Members of the Miami East FFA Chapter recently attended the Ohio FFA State Convention in Columbus April 29-May 1.

Members were recognized for various accomplishments and competed in several contests. While in Columbus, the members attended the Career Show, met FFA members from across the state, and enjoyed eating out. Motivational speakers at the convention included Judd Laipply, creator of the Evolution of Dance, and Dan Thurman, a juggler and stuntman.

Chapter members toured the Schottenstein Center and College of Food Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences on the campus of The Ohio State University.

During the National Chapter Award results the chapter was named the State Winner in the area of Model of Innovation in the Student Development Division, a first for the chapter. Overall the chapter was named No. 12 Chapter in the state, out of over 315 chapters. Additionally, the chapter placed in the Top 10 in the area of Community Development. These results are from the chapter’s National Chapter Application. The application will now be sent to the National FFA for review and placing. Additionally, the chapter was recognized for being a Gold Medal Chapter.

A highlight of the weekend was the conferring of the State FFA Degree. This year, Miami East had three members receive such an honor. Seth Coverstone, son of Mark Coverstone and Brenda Coverstone; Jessica Starry, daughter of Brian Starry and Kyle Roeth, son of Mark and Paula Roeth all received the State FFA Degree. The degree requirements are based on their earned income from their Supervised Agricultural Experience program, leadership experience, and FFA and community activities.
Graduate Eric Percel was named the District 5 Star in Agribusiness for his business, Eric’s Honey Sales.

Past chapter officers submitted their year’s officer books. Victoria Kinney, Kelsey P. Wintrow, and Jessica Starry received state recognition for completing a gold rated Chapter Secretary’s, Treasurer’s Book and Reporter’s Book, respectfully.

Recognized for their State FFA Proficiency Awards were Eric Percel and Josh Furrow. They received a medal and a cash prize. Percel placed second in the Agricultural Processing Proficiency, while Furrow placed third in the area of Poultry Production Proficiency.
Furrow was also recognized on stage for receiving an Ohio FFA Alumni Washington Leadership Conference Scholarship. He will be attending the Washington Leadership Conference this summer in Washington, D.C.

Heather Skaggs was selected to participate in the State FFA Chorus. Josh Niswonger participated in the State FFA Band.
Miami East FFA Advisor Marie Carity was awarded the Honorary State FFA Degree for her work as the Ohio Assoc. of Agricultural Educators president.

Other areas of recognition for the Miami East FFA included special recognition by the Ohio FFA Foundation for continued support and donation of monies to the Foundation and donations to Children’s Hospital. Members attending were David Long, Jacob Eidemiller, Josh Furrow, Shane Kingrey, Katelyn Melvin, Christine Shoe, Angelina Henger, Shelby Long, Emily Johnson, Montana Woolley, Corrien Melvin, Heather Skaggs, Amanda Bartel, Samantha Blevins, Kyle Roeth, Seth Coverstone, Josh Niswonger, and Sheena Roach.
On Thursday, April 29, eight members of the Miami East FFA Chapter participated in the State Agriscience Fair in Columbus. Members conducted a science research project related to the agricultural field. They constructed a display board and demonstrated their understanding of the scientific method during an interview.

Brady Davis earned a silver rating in the Food Science Category, Division 1. His science project was titled, “How Long Does Vitamin C Last?” and tested the depletion of Vitamin C in common fruit juices.
Sarah Pyers earned a silver rating in the Food Science Category, Division 1. Her project tested the ease of DNA extraction in common berries. Her project was titled, “DNA Extraction in Berries.”
Morgan Jess and Montana Woolley competed in the Food Science Category, Division 3 and earned a bronze rating. Their project was titled “What Nutrients Are Really In Your Foods” and tested the commonality of starches, sugars and other nutrients in various vegetables.

Emily Johnson competed in the Environmental Science Category, Division 1 with her project concerning water’s movement in the water cycle. She earned a bronze rating with her project “Where Does Water Spend It’s Time?”

Sheena Roach competed in the Environmental Science Category, Division 2 with her project entitled, “How Safe is Our Well Water?” She earned a silver rating. Her project collected water samples from area wells and tested for nitrates and nitrites.

Angelina Henger and Jacob Eidemiller competed in the Zoology Category, Division 4. They conducted a feed trial on market chickens with their project, “The Effects of Crude Protein on the Growth of Market Broilers.” They earned a bronze rating.
