Orme gets top exhibit prize at Indiana State Fair
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Callie Orme’s Personality project exhibit was named the best Personality exhibit out of 206 at the Indiana State Fair. This is quite an honor, given that Rush County annually has more than 150 non-livestock exhibits at the state fair.

Orme, the 18-year old daughter of Blair and Natasha Orme, is a member of the Center Lucky Sodbusters 4-H Club and also exhibits beef, horse and pony and sewing. She took heed of all project requirements for her exhibit, including teaching a friend how to make his or her own monthly budget and then describing the teaching experience. Budgeting is difficult for many, practiced by few and foreign to some, yet Orme took the opportunity to learn and project herself into a realistic budget situation.

She belongs to the Rush County 4-H Jr. Leaders organization. A senior at Rush County High School, Orme is a member of the Rushville FFA, Student Council, the Holcad staff, gymnastics team and a varsity cheerleader. She is also involved with the Wee Ministry at Center Christian Church. Her future plans include attending college to attain a degree in psychology.

Illinois Pork Premiere Carcass winners announced
URBANA, Ill. — Lauren Honegger of Livingston County took home top honors in the Junior Pork Premiere Carcass Show at the Illinois State Fair.

Honegger’s 273-pound Yorkshire barrow was named Junior Pork Premiere Champion and Junior Land of Lincoln Champion. As well, it was the Open Land of Lincoln Champion.

Her barrow had a hot carcass weight of 211 pounds with 0.5 inch of backfat and a 10.3 square-inch loineye. Her barrow gained 0.804 pound of lean gain per day, and scored well on qualitative measures such as color, marbling, firmness and pH.

The Reserve Champion Junior Premiere Carcass Show winner was exhibited by Mike Zehr of Tazewell County, with a 290-pound crossbred barrow with a hot carcass weight of 211 pounds, 1 inch of backfat and a 9.9 square-inch loineye. Zehr’s barrow scored 0.803 pound of lean gain per day.

Dan Jennings, University of Illinois extension animal systems educator, said pigs were nominated and tattooed last spring. Live and carcass data were collected throughout the contest; these figures were used to calculate the pounds of lean gain per day to establish rankings. In addition, qualitative measures were taken for loin color, marbling, firmness and pH.

Champion honors in the Open Premiere Carcass Show were awarded to Darvin Miller of McLean County, with a 298-pound crossbred barrow that had a 9.3 square-inch loineye area with 0.9 inch of backfat and 0.825 pound of lean gain per day. Reserve champion honors in the Open Premiere also went to Miller, with a 281-pound crossbred barrow that yielded 0.819 pound of lean gain per day on test.
