Spotlight on Youth - Oct. 13, 2010
Students to take the stage at National FFA Convention
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — When the lights are dimmed and hush descends upon an audience of more than 54,000 at the nation’s largest annual student convention this Oct. 20 through Oct. 23, 2010, in Conseco Fieldhouse, Sarah Peterson and Tanner Mick will share the spotlight in a musical performance that will inspire the crowd and provide memories to last a lifetime.

Peterson and Mick of the Miami Trace FFA Chapter have been selected to sing in the National FFA Chorus. The students submitted an audition tape and were two of 80 young people selected nationwide to be members of the prestigious group.

The choir will perform several times at the 83rd National FFA Convention, adding excitement and motivation to the sessions through their music. National FFA Chorus members are nominated by their state associations and were chosen from a pool of more than 150 applications. The young musicians arrive in Indianapolis three days before the convention begins to rehearse.

U of I students unlock potential at FFA Greenhand Conference
URBANA, Ill. — The University of Illinois Collegiate FFA (CFFA) chapter led more than 300 freshman high school students in a series of exciting workshops designed to unlock their leadership potential at the Urbana-Champaign campus last month.

“We hope students left with a greater understanding of what it means to be a leader,” said Ellen Reeder, CFFA member and freshman in agricultural communications at the U of I. “We also wanted to expose them to the many opportunities available to them in this organization.”

Reeder and Ryan Umina, a U of I senior in sociology, led a “We” workshop where students discussed the value of teamwork and how more knowledge of teamwork will help them succeed as a leader. Reeder is a former Illinois State FFA Reporter, and Umina is taking a leadership course in the agricultural leadership and science education curriculum at the U of I.

“We want to set youth up to be stronger leaders now so they’ll have a huge advance through high school and as they go off to college,” Umina said.

In addition, students attended “You” and “Me” workshops designed to help them learn the characteristics of leadership on a personal level and what it means to be a leader in the context of their school and community.

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — High school graduates who have a strong desire to pursue a career in managing and/or marketing Registered Jersey™ cattle are encouraged to apply for the 2011 Fred Stout Experience awards.

The awards are presented annually in memory of Fred J. Stout Jr., Mt. Carmel, Ill., a lifelong Jersey breeder and member of the Jersey Marketing Service staff from 1978 to 1997 who believed that the best learning experiences happen in the everyday world.
Two awards will be offered: (1) a minimum 10-week summer marketing internship with Jersey Marketing Service, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and (2) a minimum 10-week on-farm, structured internship in Jersey herd management.
