It is one of 23 different national events that use the fun of competition to connect classroom learning and careers.

FCS allocates $100,000 in scholastic support
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Farm Credit Services of Mid-America – a $16 billion ag lending cooperative serving farmers and rural America in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee - re-affirmed its commitment to educational success by making over $100,000 in scholarships available to students studying agriculture during the 2011 academic year.

In addition to offering scholarships through the 4-H and FFA and several universities across the association’s four-state territory, Farm Credit awards 36 scholarships to FCS members or children of members who are majoring in agriculture at any four-year university.  The values of the FCS scholarships are between $1,000 and $1,500 and are awarded based on academic record, leadership qualities, and community involvement.

The scholarships will be awarded to students choosing to pursue careers in agriculture and are part of the cooperative’s stewardship program which involves returning greater value to rural America by increasing the association’s investment in education and youth activities. The scholarships are available to FCS members, their dependents and spouses of the ag lending cooperative. The deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2011. Scholarships will be awarded in May.  To apply, go online to www.e-farmcredit.com and click on “Community,” then “Scholarships” to download the application or call 800-444-3276 to talk the local office about obtaining an application.

Pettisville student wins at National FFA Convention
PETTISVILLE, Ohio — Student researcher, Rebekah Meller, tested the use of garlic in ground beef to eliminate bacteria.

For five years she worked on related inhibition of food bacteria problems as her research projects for her science class and her Supervised Agricultural Experience projects . During her junior year of high school she started conducting research with a PhD candidate at The Ohio State University Food Science Lab. Through her various research projects the Ohio student was able to promote agriscience in her community through the publishing of her findings. Now this research has also won her top honors. After being selected as a finalist from her application, she had to prepare and present a 15-minute power point covering all six projects she had completed. The judges then had a five minute question period.

Meller was named Agriscience Student of the Year on Oct. 22 at the 83rd National FFA Convention during an onstage ceremony and was presented with a $3,500 scholarship. She is the daughter of Donna and Gene Meller, Jr and her FFA advisor is John Poulson.

Eight national finalists are selected for the Agriscience Student of the Year award and received a $1,000 scholarship. To qualify, applicants must present the findings of their own agriscience-related research projects. They are also evaluated on their general academic achievements and their involvement in school and community activities.
