Everett is the October FFA Member of the Month at Miami East
CASSTOWN, Ohio — The October Miami East FFA Member of the Month is Ike Everett, son of Ken and Alice Everett of Fletcher, Ohio. Everett is a freshman at Miami East, where he is a new member of the FFA Chapter.

Even though he is new to the FFA chapter, he has been an active member. He has participated in the chapter Chevy Truck Scholarship Program with Joe Johnson Chevrolet. He has also participated on the county and district Urban Soils Judging Team.

Youth compete in NJSA activities at the American Royal
KANSAS, CITY, Mo. — Junior purebred swine enthusiasts gathered in Kansas City, Mo., to compete for top honors at the second-annual National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) Gilt Show, Pedigreed Market Hog Show and Skillathon at the American Royal. The American Royal showmanship contest and crossbred market hog show were also highlights of the week.

On Oct. 20, Jay Winter of Lubbock, Texas, evaluated 56 entries in the NJSA Market Hog Show, 168 crossbred entries and 16 all other breed entries.

The Reserve Champion Landrace Market Hog was exhibited by Troy Walker of Michigantown, Ind., with his April 3 daughter of CR3 Samson 287-1.

Brian Hines of Quincy, Mich., selected champion gilts in the second-annual NJSA Gilt Show at the American Royal on Oct. 19. The Reserve Champion Gilt Overall was exhibited by Kaley Bontrager of Nappanee, Ind. Her Feb. 11 daughter of JKGM2 Alpha Male 20-1 was first named champion Landrace.

The Reserve Champion Yorkshire Gilt was also exhibited by Bontrager. She exhibited a Feb. 4 daughter of BV4 All in One 1-7. The reserve champion Landrace was shown by Troy Walker. His gilt was a March 18 daughter of CR3 Falken 78-1.

The Reserve Champion Duroc Gilt was exhibited by Amara Danner of Chalmers, Ind., with her April 23 daughter of NBD3 OJ 48-4. Youth from nine states gathered in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 19, for the second American Royal NJSA Skillathon. This educational contest tested youth on their general knowledge of the swine industry, covering topics from pork quality and reproductive anatomy to ear notching and pedigrees. Hoosiers Troy Walker and Jamey Albrecht took first and second place respectively in the senior division. Two Hoosiers also placed in the top 10 in the intermediate division. Kyle Bontrager took second and Kaley Bontrager placed seventh.

Swine showmen also gathered in the ring on Oct. 19, for the American Royal Showmanship Contest. Brian Hines of Quincy, Mich., evaluated nearly 100 showmen. Kaley Bontrager of Nappanee, Ind., was named the reserve champion overall after winning the intermediate division.

Preble Shawnee FFA hosts farm activity for elementary students
CAMDEN, Ohio — On Sept. 5, the Preble Shawnee FFA traveled to Camden Elementary to teach the kindergarten through third grade students about agriculture and farm safety.

Sixty-eight FFA members participated in this event. Throughout the day, students from each grade made their way through 10 stations that the FFA members organized.

The station topics included small animal care, sheep shearing, corn, tractor safety, potato, soybeans, poultry production and milking. There was also a petting zoo and hayride. Rod Burger of Dream Acres Farm donated his time to drive a tractor and hay wagon at the event.
