Another hot fight is shaping up in the United States Senate this week, following committee approval of a new farm bill which provides for a return to rigid 90 percent of parity price guarantees for major crops.

Thurman Craig, prominent Henry County livestock breeder living south of Shirley, Ind., will be unable to work for six weeks as the result of being kicked by a cow while milking. He suffered a torn ligament and severe bruises on his right leg.

The spring beef cattle tour will be held in the northern part of Rush County, Ind., in April. Paul Mitchell and Henry Mayo from Purdue University will be present. Members of the committee who will plan the tour are Denning Nelson, chairman, Charles Peggs, Ralph Miller, Joe White, Shirley DeTraz and Robert Dye.

More than 300 Future Farmers and 4-H members participated in the livestock judging contest at the Indiana Duroc Breeders Show held in Marion. New Prairie High School won for team judging, with a team composed of David Jesswein, Tom Ward, Bernie Hansen and Gayle Truyaert; the coach was Don Thomas.
Second Place went to the Pendleton Heights team. Jim Rodibaugh of Rensselaer was the top individual, with a score of 193 out of a possible 200. Mark Pickering of Tri High was runner-up.

Theft of 101 hogs reported stolen from farm of Bill Kramer, who lives west of Rushville. Hogs described as cross-bred, about half of them white and the others black-and-white.

Westport Implement Sales, Inc., with the International Harvester farm equipment franchise, opened for business on the east side of Indiana State Road 3 at the north edge of Westport. Joe Harpring is serving as manager and Paul McCreary, as service manager.

Wilson Grain, Inc. of Sulphur Springs, Ind., is selling Sweet Clover seed at $12.60 a bushel; Med. Red Clover seed at $33 a bushel, Certified Vernal at $37.20 a bushel and Timothy seed at $9.45 a bushel.

The signup period for the USDA’s whole-herd buyout plan began this week and continues through March 7. The program is designed to reduce the nation’s dairy herds and cut surplus dairy products. The USDA expects the program will reduce dairy herds by almost a million cows and milk production, by 12 billion pounds.

A new organization open to all persons who are interested “in the restoration, preservation and historical background” of machines and related items bearing the name of Jerome Increase Case and his companies recently was incorporated in Ohio and is seeking membership worldwide.

Corn prices have recovered to the $2.35-$2.40 per-bushel range and appear to be headed higher, says Ohio State University ag economist Dennis Henderson.

New $1.6 trillion tax cut proposed by President Bush would phase out inheritance taxes, which will benefit farmers as well. More provisions are being considered by lawmakers that would be helpful for farmers and ranchers.
FFA license plates now available in Ohio at local BMV offices for an extra $25.
First-place winners in the 4-H livestock judging team at the National Western Livestock Judging Contest held recently in Denver, Colo., was the Indiana team from Delaware County, consisting of Paul Wehmeir, Albany; Jason Miller, Gaston; Amber Atkins, Fairmount; and Neil Mauck, Gaston. Dave Schnepf is their coach. Jason Miller was the top-placing individual at the event.
The last cow from a herd of 115 that escaped from the Franklin County fairgrounds in the Columbus suburb of Hilliard, during a rodeo in September, is still on the run after eluding her captors for more than four months.
