The Indiana General Assembly voted a bill through both the state Senate and House which would increase sales and income taxes as well as having higher cigarette and alcohol taxes.

A Randolph County draft horseman, Albert Fields, shipped a registered Belgian draft horse mare to  Dyersburg, Tenn., that will be part of a shipment of draft horses going to a mission in Nigeria, where they will be used to farm in the House Baptist mission fields of 30 churches in the area.

Four outstanding Hoosier 4-H club members will represent Indiana at the National 4-H Conference in Washington D.C., next month. They are Debbie Brashaber, Rushville; Beverly McFarland, Bainbridge; Mike Gosney, West Lafayette; and Tom Lee, Merrillville. Selection was made on the basis of their 4-H achievement records and personal interviews.

Frank Naylor, USDA undersecretary of agriculture for small community and rural development, waits to be confirmed as the new chair of the Farm Credit Administration, recently appointed by President Ronald Regan.

Benton County was Indiana’s top soybean producer last year, producing 5.55 million bushels on 115,000 harvested acres, for an average yield of 48 bushels per acre. White County was the runner-up, with Allen, Jasper and Grant counties rounding out the top five.

Montgomery County was Indiana’s top corn producer last year, producing 18.68 million bushels. White County was next, followed by Rush, Benton and Newton counties. Rush County had the state’s top average yield with 146 bushels per acre, harvested on 111,900 acres.

New Ohio state law requires installation of additional lighting and reflectors on tractors. The new law was signed by Gov. Taft last fall and gives farmers one year to make the necessary improvements.

A program at the University of Kentucky called “Management First” is teaching farmers and agribusiness professionals the principles they need to make sound management decisions and enjoy their work. This program was developed out of programs at Cornell University and Ohio State University.
