Indiana sale features JD tractors, ’59 Pontiac Catalina
WEST PORT, Ind. — Rusty Harmeyer, of Harmeyer Auction and Appraisal Company, held the estate auction of Donald “Kenney” Stevens in West Port, Ind., on July 16, 2011. Stevens had lived in the community for over 40 years and was retired from Cummings Engine in Columbus, Ind., after 30-plus years of employment.
Stevens was an avid John Deere collector and enjoyed restoring vintage cars. It was a hot, sunny day, but the enthusiastic crowd of 356 bidders on site and 48 bidders online were excited with the opportunity to buy that special item for which they came.
With an estimated 600 auction-goers in attendance from all across Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, along with 13 states represented online, the bidding was fast and vigorous.

Highlights of the sale include: a Browning 20 Ga. Automatic selling for $775, Browning 22 Cal. Pistol sold for $575, Colt Scout had a final bid of $475. The vehicles were also in very high demand, with the 2010 Chevy Equinox selling for $20,000 to a Warsaw, Ind. buyer, a restored 1959 Pontiac Catalina Convertible sold for $21,250 to a collector near Toledo, Ohio.

The 1994 Dodge diesel pickup with 180,000 miles found a final hammer price of $8,100 to a Knightstown, Ind. buyer. John Deere tractors where also in strong demand with several “interested” attendees gathering around the line-up of restored collector tractors.

The highlight of the tractors was the 1949 D selling for $7,000 to a Rush county collector, the 1939 John Deere “B” found its final price of $3,200 from a Francesville, Ind. collector, with the same buyer winning the 1949 John Deere M for $3,500, a 1954 John Deere 70 sold to a Rush county collector with a hammer price of $3,550 and  a Suzuki King Quad sold for $2,400.

Lawn and garden and farm implements also had several interested bidders, with an International Harvester 1650 Cub Cadet lawn tractor with tiller selling for $2.100, John Deere 3-bottom plow bringing $275, David Bradley manure spreader found a final price of  $525, 609 John Deere rotary cutter - $600, and a 12-foot John Deere disc fetching a $1,200 final bid.

The furniture and appliances attracted much interest with a 42-inch flat-screen TV selling for $600, washer & dryer selling for $450 and the master bedroom suite bringing a final bid of $350. The real estate was also sold during the auction with  several local bidders actively bidding on the property.

This was just a good “ole-fashioned” type of estate auction, where the entire estate was sold allowing the entire family, the community and any other interested buyer, the opportunity to acquire a small piece of Mr. Stevens’ life, said Harmeyer.
