Miami East FFA Urban Soils Team wins district contest
CASSTOWN, Ohio — On September 28, members of the Miami East FFA Chapter competed in the District 5 Soils Judging Contest in Shelby County, Ohio. The chapter’s Urban Soils Team placed first out of 20 teams at the event and qualified for the state competition.

The Urban Soils Team included Tyler Church, Keith Skaggs, Bill Heilman, Tyler Schindel, Ike Everett and Logan Pyers. This is the first time in many years that the Miami East FFA Urban Soils Team won the district.

Out of 108 individuals, Church placed third; Skaggs, fourth; Heilman, fifth; and Schindel, seventh.

The Rural Soils Team from Miami East FFA also competed at the district competition. Members included David Heffelfinger, Josh Hershberger, Jacob Reid, Hannah Long and Parker Davis. The team placed tenth out of 23 teams. Heffelfinger was the high individual from Miami East placing 24th out of 146 individuals.

Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Newport Sportsman’s Club hosted and coordinated the district event. The State Soil Judging Contest was held Oct. 15 in Marion County, northwest of Columbus, Ohio.

The Miami East FFA Urban Soils Team placed 20th in the contest. The highest individual from Miami East was Tyler Schindel, placing 29th.
