1972: Johnny Cash, Sonny & Cher head Indiana State Fair

Wheat harvest for the state of Indiana is about 90 percent completed, with oats 50 percent harvested. Corn is growing rapidly and early fields are showing tassels in all sections of the state. In many counties early corn has started to silk. About 25 percent of the soybean crop was blooming in the early fields.

Sisters Susan and Gloria Barker took top honors in the 4-H sheep show at the Decatur County Fair. Susan had the Grand Champion Ewe Lamb, which was also the Overall Grand Champion, and won the Junior and Expert Showmanship contest. Her older sister, Gloria, won the market lamb class and was runner-up to Susan for the ewe lamb and overall grand championships. The Grand Champion was a Hampshire and the Reserve was of the Southdown breed. Hubert McCormick of Lafayette served as sheep judge for the show.
This year’s lineup of big-name entertainment for the Indiana State Fair is Sonny & Cher, David Cassidy, Johnny Cash, Lynn Anderson & World’s Championship Rodeo, Mike Douglas and Hell Drivers and Harness Racing.

David Caudill was the winner of the Delta FFA and 4-H Greased Pig Contest at the Lions Delaware County Fair. David, FFA division champion, took the runoff round from Jill Madill, girls’ division champion, Tom Mihal, 4-H senior division boys’ champion, and Jeff Smot, 4-H Junior Division winner.

The Grand Champion Boar at the recent National Duroc Congress in Lafayette, Ind., was owned by Guy Jackson and family of Warren. The Jacksons also exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Boar and the Reserve Grand Champion Gilt. Their herd sire, Bulldozer, was named Reserve Premier Sire.

The Trade Promotion Authority Bill narrowly passed in the U.S. House by a vote of 215-212, at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Rep. Baron Bill (D-Ind.).

Central Soya Co., Inc., a soybean processing firm based in Fort Wayne, and its parent corporation, Cereol S.A., announced they have agreed to be acquired by Bunge Limited, a global agribusiness and food company headquartered in White Plains, N.Y.
