LIMA, Ohio — Western Ohio was the hotspot as Holstein breeders from around the state met March 14 for the Ohio Holstein Assoc. (OHA) annual meeting.

While OHA members took care of business in the morning, the luncheon was where the light shone on Ohio Holstein Queen contestants, and on accomplished breeders as they were recognized for their efforts in breeding and promoting Ohio Holsteins.

Competing to be crowned the queen and the opportunity to travel the state to promote Holsteins were Kayla King of West Liberty, Emma Mathews of New Vienna and Bailee Mazzaro of Williamsfield. After an interview process and the opportunity to answer a question in front of the entire audience, Mathews was crowned.

She is the daughter of Donald and Jackie Bickel and said she looks forward to meeting the breeders around the state and being a part of the National Holstein Futurity at the Ohio State Fair in August.

Several awards were handed out to breeders, including the Buckeye Breed Builder honor given to the Steiner brothers of Pine-Tree Dairy in Marshallville. The Distinguished Buckeye Breeder went to Dick Endoe of Lodi.

Retiring OHA President Dallas Rynd of Ashville was honored with the Distinguished Service Award after taking on the leadership of the association in difficult circumstances. He was greeted with a standing ovation as he received his accolades. And the Ohio Woman of the Year award was given to a surprised Marlene Steinke of Anna. While the award was being presented, her family silently entered the back of the room and were there to greet her when she was presented with the plaque.

The day concluded with a fun auction sponsored by the Ohio Holstein Women to raise money for their scholarship fund.
