A cow became a traffic victim when the steering on an old-model car locked and it plunged through a fence on the Ed Scott farm, and hit Bossy grazing on the other side – and then hit a utility pole southwest of Greenfield. The driver of the 1955 Chevrolet, Wilford Hill Jr., was unhurt, but the car was a total loss and the cow had a broken leg.

Fellow members of the Springfield Township Methodist Church met together recently to shell and pick corn for Thomas Lindsey who was recently injured in a truck accident. Those helping were Carlos Miles, Carl McClue and Donald Finch, who donated the use of their shellers while Marvin Lacky had his picker on hand.

Others furnishing equipment and helping were Orville Seal, Howard Miles, Gene Baudendistel, Harold Baudendistel, Dale McClure, Donald Barbour, Robert Martin, Robert Schnitker Jr. and Rev. Warren Montgomery. Also, Don Lindsey came from West Lafayette in the afternoon to help the men.

 

Fayette County Police report the arrest of six people in connection with the theft of livestock and farm articles in the area during the past several months, consisting of a total of 15 head of cattle, 15 pigs and 160 bales of hay. Some were recovered, some cattle sold to Cincinnati Stockyards, and the remainder were butchered and sold to individuals within a three-county area. Livestock and farm articles had been taken from farms owned by Brian Adams, Ellis Charles, Jr. and George Henry.

A “river of corn” spilled onto the ground at Rensselaer recently when a grain elevator collapsed, authorities said. One man was injured slightly.

 

Director Steven Maurer, Ohio Depart-ment of Agriculture, announced the de-partment received notice that Ohio meets or exceeds all requirements for achieving tuberculosis accredited-free status from Dr. J.W. Glosser, administrator, USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Ohio has had no tuberculosis found in any cattle or bison for at least five years, which is required.

In the North American Classic Holstein Sale at the recent North American International Livestock Exhibition, the show netted $106,075 in gross sales. There were about 670 animals in the sale, with the average price per head being $2,209.90. The top-selling female was sold by Cecil Baker of Roanoke, Ind., and she went to Long Haven Farms, Inc. of Clayton, Mich., for $5,000.

The Mathisen Tree Farm of Montcalm County, Mich., loaded 250 Christmas trees to be shipped to Fort Campbell, Ky., to be distributed to families of military soldiers.

Jay Crisenbery of Eureka, Ohio, has opened his 111-acre farm property to deer hunters in wheelchairs. The hunters are so tickled to be out that they don’t even care if they get a deer.
