Views and opinions: It isn’t just children who fight against what ‘truth’ should be

Daniel 8:12 — “And on account of the transgression the host will be given over to the horn along with the regular sacrifice; and it will fling truth to the ground and perform its will and prosper.”

Today many fight against truth. Children have always struggled with it and, unfortunately, adults do too. There was a time when truth stood firm like a castle on a hilltop, but now the castle has started to crumble as people adapt it to whatever they believe is best for them.

When in a difficult situation, children often twist the facts to get out of trouble. Recently I was reminded of the time when you kids changed the truth to solve a problem.

I discovered sugar all over the floor one day. After assembling everyone to find out how this happened, I was met with sheepish faces. No one would admit fault. You didn’t realize I wasn’t angry; I just wanted someone to clean up the mess.

But I became frustrated because no one would admit to the crime. Finally, after I threatened punishment for everyone, Nathan stepped forward and took the blame. It wasn’t until years later I found out he really wasn’t the culprit.

But despite Nathan’s valiant attempt to defuse the problem, the truth didn’t change. A security camera on the situation would have revealed the truth.

Daniel speaks of an enemy who would “fling truth to the ground.” Sometime between 171-165 B.C., this prophecy came true when Antiochus Epiphanes came against God’s people. This wicked despot compared himself with God, stopped sacrifices in Jerusalem, and desecrated the temple. He flung the truth of scriptural faith and service of God to the ground, and many suffered.

Since then others have sought to erode the truth. Children and adults alike live in their own reality. They exalt themselves above God, fling truth to the ground, and trample it.

But the truth is not changed by the mere thought of man – only our perception of truth.

As time goes on, truth is going to become fuzzier. It will be more tempting to find your own personal version of truth to fit your situation. But this will not change reality. God’s truth remains unchangeable.

Do not let the enemy erode your foundation. Seek God’s truth through His word on a daily basis. Compare everything you hear and see with His timeless precepts.

The world may be fighting against truth today, but you, my children, must stand firm.
