Hoosier Red Hats and Purple Chaps invites the public for ‘horsin’ around’

By NANCY VORIS

EDINBURGH, Ind. — So you think you’re pretty tough in the saddle, tough enough to take on some grandmas in some friendly horse races?

Well, here’s your chance, but I’m warning you. These women have attitude.

The famed female equestrians of the Red Hats and Purple Chaps invite other horse lovers to join them for a day of “horsin’ around” to raise funds for the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

The Galloping Grannies chapter of RHPC is sponsoring the fun day on Saturday, April 12, at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburgh beginning at 10 a.m.

The day kicks off with a dog agility demonstration followed by an Equestrian Style Show and The Rocky Mountain Drill Team. At 1 p.m. the competitions begin, with five races including the Egg & Spoon Race and the Ribbon Race.

“We challenge all, young and old alike to come out and test your riding skills against the ‘old ladies’ of the club,” said Tina Nunez, speaking for the RHPC.

“We’re sure we’ll give you a run for your money.”

A special “Fun Corral” will be available for children ages 6 and under.

Registration for the day’s events is $50, which includes one stall, and children 9 and under are free. Walk-in competitors are welcome but will be charged a $10 late entry fee. Pre-registration is suggested and entry forms are accessible at www.redhatsandpurplechaps.com or by calling K. Humphreys at 317-892-3769 or e-mail Kkh923@aol.com

A $20 gate fee contribution is suggested for spectators.
RHPC was formed in December 2004, and to date has over 200 members ranging in age from 10 to 79. As is standard for all of the Red Hat Societies, ladies under 50 years of age wear pink hats, 50 and over wear Red Hats.

This Red Hat Club is unique in that all women who belong are equine owners or at least enthusiasts, and have been since they were little girls. Many members have only recently purchased their first horse.

Members come from all over the state of Indiana plus Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Nevada, and they come from an array of lifestyles and equine backgrounds.

Members may ride their breed of choice which include Arabs, Morgans, quarters and walkers. Mules, miniature horses and draft horses can also be seen at their events.
