BPIA develops a new strategic plan to promote biopesticides

By DEBORAH BEHRENDS
Illinois Correspondent

McFARLAND, Wis. —  (BPIA) developed a new strategic direction at its annual spring meeting in Washington, D.C. last month.

The BPIA’s board of directors outlined its Phase II strategic direction with three key goals. Established in 2000, the first phase of BPIA’s activities largely centered on developing its member base and a strong working relationship with the U.S. regulatory community.

BPIA is now broadening its activities to include more end-user-driven efforts. The board has identified three core initiatives to guide its activities.

•Efficacy standards – Strongly considering the establishment of a certification program, administered by a third party, that would certify the effectiveness of EPA-registered biopesticides. Survey data suggests that a certification program would be desirable and would increase confidence in biopesticide performance.

•Educational efforts – An increased focus on the development of science-based, integrated media elements designed to educate growers, researchers, consultants, distributors, and consumers on the benefits of biopesticides.

•Regulatory – Continuing the success that BPIA has realized in this area, including participation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the Pesticide Registration Implementation Renewal Act (PRIA 2) Working Group.

Founded in 2000, the BPIA is a nonprofit organization committed to communicating the benefits of biopesticide technology in effective pest management programs.

Among its stated objectives are the development and promotion of industry standards for biopesticides and the establishment of strong working relationships with the authorities entrusted to regulate pesticides.
