Juniors compete at NJSA Eastern Regional

HARRISBURG, Pa. — More than 190 National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) exhibitors from 10 states gathered together at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa., for the NJSA Eastern Regional on Oct. 3-4. Tim Isler of Winchester, Ind., served as the judge for this two-day event.

Isler selected champion gilts from 176 entries on Saturday. John Owen Ebersole of Duncannon, Pa., claimed the title of Champion Gilt Overall. She was first named Champion Duroc Gilt, as well as Champion Bred-and-Owned Duroc Gilt. The Reserve Champion Gilt Overall was exhibited by Brodi Voight of Tipp City, Ohio. She first claimed champion honors in the Yorkshire show.

The Champion Hampshire Gilt was also exhibited Brodi Voight with her Feb. 10 daughter of GRA6 Yield 45-5. Trey Fecke of Bonfield, Ill., exhibited the Champion Bred-and-Owned Hampshire Gilt.
The Reserve Champion Duroc Gilt was shown by Macy Mead of Mooresville, Ind. Reserve Champion Bred-and-Owned Duroc honors went to Dalaney Vickrey of Warren, Ind.

The Reserve Champion Yorkshire Gilt was exhibited by Madeline Sheiss of Bringhurst, Ind. The Champion Bred-and-Owned Yorkshire Gilt was shown by Cassie Parks of Wilmington, Ohio.
Top swine showmen from across the country gathered in the ring Friday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 4, to compete for the champion showman title. Heath Storer, of Hillsboro, Ohio placed 6th in the intermediate showmanship division; Macy Mead, of Mooresville, Ind. placed 1st in the junior division, Cody Clyburn, of Bloomingburg, Ohio placed 2nd in the junior division; Gus Mitchem, South Solon, Ohio placed 5th in the junior; Skylar Knapp, of Greenfield, Ind. placed 1st in the novice division; Maddie Fugate, Mahomet, Ill. placed 2nd in the novice; A.J. Hornback, of Fillmore, Ind. placed 3rd in the novice; Payton Hines, of Quincy, Mich. placed 5th; Madeline Sheiss, Bringhurst, Ind. placed 6th in the novice; Dalaney Vickrey, of Warren, Ind. placed 8th in the novice and Brodi Voight, of Tipp City, Ohio placed 10th.

Youth swine enthusiasts also competed for honors in the NJSA Eastern Regional Skillathon held on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Harrisburg, Pa. Cody Clyburn, Bloomingburg, Ohio placed 6th in the junior skillathon; Trey Fecke, Bonfield, Ill. placed 8th in the junior skillathon; Skylar Knapp, Greenfield, Ind. placed 1st in the novice skillathon; Maddie Fugate, Mahomet, Ill. placed 2nd in the novice; Hayley McElroy, East Palestine, Ohio placed 4th in the novice; Cade Fecke, Bonfield, Ill. placed 5th in the novice; and Brodi Voight, Tipp City, Ohio placed 8th in the novice division.

The Overall Sweepstakes Awards Ceremony completed the 2008 NJSA Eastern Regional. The Sweepstakes Award is based upon the combination of points from the gilt show, showmanship contest and skillathon.

The senior sweepstakes Award was presented to Sarah Farley of West Hazleton, Pa. Placing fifth, an award check of  $50 and a pewter plate was awarded to Kiersten Heckel of Roseville, Ohio.
In the Intermediate division, the champion awards were presented to Lauren Robbins of Titusville, Pa. She received a belt buckle and check for $250. The third place award of $150 and a pewter plate went to Heather Storer of Hillsboro, Ohio. The Junior Sweepstakes Award was captured by Cody Clyburn of Bloomingburg, Ohio. He was awarded a belt buckle and $250. Second-place awards went to Macy Mead of Mooresville, Ind. She was given a pewter plate and $200.
In the novice division, the champion awards were presented to Skylar Knapp of Greenfield, Ind. She received a belt buckle and check for $250. A second-place pewter plate and $200 was awarded to Maddie Fugate of Mahomet, Ill.

The third-place award of $150 and a pewter plate went to Madeline Sheiss of Bringhurst, Ind. Brodi Voight of Tipp City, Ohio, received fourth place, a pewter plate and $100. The 6th, 7th and 10th place winners were also recognized: 6th – Payton Hines of Quincy, Mich.; 7th – Dalaney Vickrey of Warren, Ind.; 10th – Keegan Sheiss of Bringhurst, Ind.

NCGA-BASF scholarship enters sophomore year
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The National Corn Growers Association and the BASF Corp. have joined forces for the second year to award five $1,000 scholarships annually to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field.
“Education of young growers is vital to the continued success of American agriculture,” said Tim Dolan, chairman of the NCGA’s Grower Services Action Team and a farmer from Winthrop, Minn. “Through this valuable program we are assisting tomorrow’s agricultural leaders to excel in a world of increased technological and scientific sophistication.”

“Education is critical to the future success of agriculture and BASF is very pleased to partner with the NCGA again this year to help deserving students pursue their dreams,” said Markus Heldt, group vice president, North America, BASF. “BASF and the NCGA share a common vision of creating opportunities for corn growers and their families.

We believe this scholarship program is one way to help make that vision a reality.”

Applicants for the NCGA Academic Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship Program must be entering at least their second undergraduate year, and they or a parent or legal guardian must be an NCGA member. Scholarship applications can be submitted as early as Nov. 1, 2008, but must be postmarked on or before Jan. 23, 2009. Complete rules are in the application packet at www.ncga.com/scholarship
