NAWG announces 2009 WOLF program class

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Assoc. of Wheat Growers (NAWG) is pleased to announce the class for the 2009 Wheat Organization Leaders of the Future, or WOLF, program.

Participants will be: Keven Bradley of Cut Bank, Mont.; Scott Brown of Soda Springs, Idaho; Gary Millershaski of Lakin, Kan.; Eddie Moore of Red Springs, N.C.; Jimmie Musick of Sentinel, Okla.; Bernard Peterson of Bardstown, Ky.; Tyson Raymond of Helix, Ore.; Shawn Sullivan of Wallace, Neb.; Chris Tallman of Brandon, Colo.; Bob Wisness of Watford City, N.D.; and Erik Younggren of Hallock, Minn.

WOLF is designed as an advanced leadership program for state wheat grower leaders who will soon become part of the NAWG board of directors. The program focuses on the responsibilities of board members, governance, media relations and lobbying.

The 2009 program will take place immediately preceding the NAWG and U.S. Wheat Associates winter meetings, to be held in Washington, D.C., in February. The WOLF program is an annual event sponsored by Bayer CropScience and put on by the NAWG Foundation.

Kansan recruits most new NCBA members

DENVER, Colo. — Tracy Brunner of Ramona, Kan., has won the 2008 Top Hand Award from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Assoc. (NCBA) for recruiting the most new members to the organization during fiscal year 2008, which ended Sept. 30. The contest was sponsored by John Deere.

Brunner brought in 57 new members during the year, and receives a dream vacation or custom saddle, two airline tickets to either the 2008 Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show in Phoenix or the Cattle Industry Summer Conference in Denver, registration and three nights lodging at either the convention or conference, and a personalized Schaefer vest.

Runner-up in the Top Hand Contest was David Fitzpatrick of Winchester, Ky., who won last year. He has won the contest six times; this is the second time he has been runner-up. Fitzpatrick, who is active on the NCBA Property Rights/Environmental Management Committee, signed up 56 new members in 2008.
To join the Top Hand Club a current NCBA member must recruit three new members for the organization, and must recruit two new members each year after to stay in the club.

CME sets 2009 meeting date; lists feeder cattle options
CHICAGO, Ill. — CME Group announced that its 2009 annual meeting of shareholders will be held at 4 p.m. Central Time on May 13, at The University of Chicago Gleacher Center, located at 450 North Cityfront Plaza Drive in Chicago.

CME also announced that options on feeder cattle futures are now listed on CME Globex. The electronically traded feeder cattle options will be offered virtually 23 hours a day each weekday, including side-by-side with the floor-traded product that will continue to trade from 9:05 a.m.-1:02 p.m. Chicago time. These options have the exact same contract specifications and are fungible with the floor-traded contracts.

Ag Urban Leadership begins recruitment in Iowa
URBANDALE, Iowa — The Iowa Soybean Assoc. (ISA) Ag Urban Leadership Initiative is looking for Iowans who would like to shape the future direction of their state. Applications for membership in the 2009 class are now being accepted.

The program, sponsored by West Central Co-op, Heartland Co-op, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and the soybean checkoff, brings together community leaders from agricultural and urban professions and encourages them to develop their skills as “professional Iowans.”

Applications may be submitted until mid-January 2009. The first session of the new year will convene in early March 2009 with five meetings scheduled throughout the year. The group will meet at a variety of locations on dates that won’t interfere with farm work or family vacations. The year’s class will conclude in December 2009.

Syngenta, Dow AgroSciences jointly to develop compounds
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Syngenta and Dow AgroSciences today announced a research and development agreement to evaluate current and future Dow AgroSciences compounds for incorporation into Syngenta’s market-leading seed treatment portfolio.

They will target opportunities to maximize crop vigor and yield in field crops and vegetables through synergies between the two companies’ chemistries. Joint projects will aim to accelerate the delivery to market of high performance seed treatment and seed enhancement technologies. Dow compounds will be used in combination with Syngenta’s portfolio; products arising from the collaboration will be commercialized by Syngenta.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
