Junior Pork Day shows new showmen around the arena |

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — First- and second-year members in the 4-H swine project, along with their parents, are invited to attend Purdue University’s Junior Pork Day. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 7 in Lily Hall on the West Lafayette campus.
Participants who come to Junior Pork Day will learn about live hog classes, carcass evaluation, selecting the right show pig and hands-on showmanship practice.
“We also encourage parents to attend the workshop so there will be at least two sets of ears from a family learning information about the swine project,” said Clint Rusk, with Purdue’s Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education.
One of the sessions will be dedicated to helping 4-H members and their parents know what to do and what preparations to make prior to attending pig sales.
“It’s important that the 4-H member and their parents are prepared before a pig sale so they do not get caught up in the auction chant and emotion,” Rusk said.
Rusk will discuss setting a price to pay before bidding begins and what to look for when choosing pigs.
“It is important to know that it is not necessarily good to always buy the biggest pig because by the time the county fair comes it may not be the right size,” Rusk said.
The event is $5 per person and includes lunch. |
