MSU students recognized at International Dairy meeting
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Four Michigan State University (MSU) undergraduate animal science students were lauded for their scholastic and leadership achievements during the 2009 American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) Student Affiliate Division (SAD) annual meetings held in July in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The four MSU students honored during the annual ADSA-SAD awards banquet were animal science juniors Karmen Jackson, Caro, Mich.; and Rosemary Rice, Filion, Mich.; animal science and agribusiness management junior Elizabeth Motz, St. Johns, Mich.; and Kayla Stomack, a spring 2009 animal science graduate and first-year large animal clinical science student from Minden City, Mich.

While there, the MSU students participated in the dairy quiz bowl, attended business meetings and educational sessions, took part in various competitions and were engaged in a career symposium where students participated in a roundtable discussion with professionals representing various aspects of the dairy industry.

Students also attended the awards banquet, where Stomack and Weiss were recognized for placing second in the undergraduate dairy foods oral competition and undergraduate original research oral competition, respectively. Nicole Olynk, a graduate student in the MSU Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Economics, was presented with the 2009 Outstanding Dairy Club Advisor award. Jackson, on the other hand, participated in the dairy quiz bowl and made a presentation about the tour the MSU Dairy Club held at the MSU Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center in the spring for the SAD activities symposium. Members of university dairy clubs from across North America attend this symposium to learn about creative and educational projects and events conducted by other chapters.

Regarded as the leading science and research association for the dairy industry, the American Dairy Science Association was founded in 1906 as the National Association of Dairy Instructors and Investigators by teachers and researchers from the University of Illinois. The ADSA Student Affiliate Division is made up of college and university student chapters from across the country.

Amanda-Clearcreek Ag Ed department works with OSU
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Every fall numerous student teachers from College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences travel across the state of Ohio to practice what they have spent the last three years trying to learn. This year is no different, and Amanda-Clearcreek is excited to welcome Mr. J.D. Bethel to our chapter.
Bethel is a senior at The Ohio State University, majoring in Agricultural Education and hails from Mechanicsburg, where he grew up on his family’s grain farm. At Ohio State, he is involved in the Agricultural Education Society and the Ohio State Cycling Team, where he recently had the opportunity to ride in Pelotonia.

Many of us that went to camp may already recognize Mr. Bethel, because he has been working at FFA Camp Muskingum for the past three years. When asked why he decided to come to Amanda to student teach he replied, “There are many exciting things that are happening at Amanda, you have two world class ag. teachers and students that are motivated to learn.”

Albany FFA participates in fair activities
ALBANY, Ohio — From Sept. 9-13, the annual Albany Fair took place. The Alexander FFA took part in the fair in many ways. First, the chapter took part in setting the stage and helping put up fence on Albany Fair workday.

As the week progressed, Albany FFA had many members participate and earn success in the livestock and still project events.

In addition to having members take part in competitions the FFA held the annual Fun Day, which is a series of kid-friendly games and events geared toward agricultural aspects.

Also, on Sept. 9, the Alexander chapter officers attended the 2009 COLT Conference. During this conference the officers learned different ways of how to be a better leader and how to make their chapter better as a whole. Attending the conference to speak to the crowd was Rhett Laubach.

Laubach gave informative and instructional advice to the chapter officers, encouraging them to make goals that will help inform and educate others about FFA aspects.
