NCF offer cattle industry scholarships
DENVER, Colo. — Applications are now being accepted for the 2010-2011 Beef Industry Scholarship program, sponsored by the CME Group, and presented by the National Cattlemen’s Foundation. All entries must be postmarked by Dec. 1, 2009.

Ten scholarships of $1,500 will be awarded to young people pursuing careers in the beef industry. The program encourages talented and thoughtful students who have demonstrated a commitment to a career in the beef industry, either through classes, internships or life experience. Graduating high school seniors or full-time undergraduate students enrolled at a two-year or four-year college for the 2010-2011 academic school year are eligible to apply. Applicants or their families must be members of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Assoc. to receive the scholarship.
Applications must include a 750-word essay that identifies a key issue confronting the beef industry and suggests a solution. 

Applicants must also submit a letter expressing future career goals and provide two letters of recommendation.  A full description of the scholarship program, submission requirements and an online application can be found at www.nationalcattlemensfoundation.org/scholarship.aspx or by calling 303-694-0305.

In addition to a scholarship, the first-place winner will receive airfare and lodging to attend the Cattle Industry Annual Convention and Trade Show in San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 27–30.

Fairbanks FFA members attend national convention
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Nine Fairbanks FFA members recently attended the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. On the way to the convention, members had the opportunity to stop in Chicago to tour Willis Tower and the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. The next stop included a visit to Moline, Ill., where they toured the John Deere Seeding Plant. Members returned to Indianapolis to participate in the National FFA Convention by listening to keynote speakers Mike Rowe and Harvey Alston, attended the career show and other various leadership sessions. The convention wrapped up with the American Degree ceremony, where chapter members Kristin Burns and Daniel Nicol received the distinguished honor.

Illinois Central College earns top honors
EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The Illinois Central College (ICC) livestock judging team competed in the Premier Stockman Livestock Judging Contest hosted by the Clinton Central FFA chapter in Frankfort, Ind. on Oct. 17.

ICC freshman Blaine Evans, of Thorntown, Ind. finished among the top ten individuals in both the swine and oral reasons divisions.
The contest included 12 classes of livestock (beef cattle, swine and sheep) as well as oral reasons, in which the contestants verbally present the logic and reasoning for how they played a class. Participants included 160 students from 12 community colleges from throughout the nation.

Other ICC team members included Jay Iiiff, Wyoming; Jeremy Shaner, Bradford, Ill.; Danielle Robinson, Congerville, Ill.; Rachel Fogle, Congerville, Ill.; Natalie Weer, Pekin, Ill.; Emily Tabor, Goodfield, Ill.; Leslie Hope Johnson, Tremont, Ill.; Travis Terhaar, Parker City, Ind.; and Jay Streitmatter, Sparland.

The team is coached by Grant Grebner.

Kentucky 4-H dairy team places in national competition
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky 4-H Dairy Judging team participated in the All-American Dairy Judging Contest in Pennsylvania  and the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held in conjunction with the World Dairy Expo this fall.

“The team competed against 12 other teams from across the United States and had an excellent day at the Pennsylvania All-American Contest,” said Larissa Tucker, senior extension associate for dairy youth programs for the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. “They were the second place team overall in the 4-H contest. They placed in the top five in three of the five breeds. They won the Holstein breed team competition. In oral reasons, the team placed third overall.”

Team members are Alex Poole, Madison Shanks and Kevin Herndon from Spencer County and Dylan Barber of Taylor County. Team members earned several individual awards. Herndon placed third in Guernseys, Shanks placed fourth in Holsteins and Poole placed third in Holsteins, Jerseys and the oral reasons competition. Poole was also third-high individual overall in the contest.

At the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, the team placed ninth overall. They won the Jersey breed team award and were the seventh place team overall in oral reasons. On an individual basis, two team members joined the All-American club - Poole was the 22nd overall high individual and Shanks placed 18th overall. Shanks also placed eighth in the Jersey individual awards. Herndon placed fourth individually in Jerseys. Barber placed 21st in the Brown Swiss breed.

Miami East FFA team competes in food science contest
CASSTOWN, Ohio — Recently 10 members of the Miami East FFA Chapter competed in the District 5 Food Science and Technology Contest hosted at Minster High School. Contestants included Corey Rindler, Katelyn Melvin, Rick Thimmes, Christine Shoe, Christina Freshour, Josh Furrow, Jacob Eidemiller, Amanda Bartel, Emily Johnson and Corrine Melvin.

The highest placing team placed 2nd out of 24 teams, and the team consisted of Corey Rindler, Katelyn Melvin, Rick Thimmes and Christine Shoe. The highest placing individual from Miami East was Corey Rindler, who placed first in the entire contest. The third placing individual in the contest, also from Miami East, was Katelyn Melvin.

Since they placed in the top two teams, Miami East will compete at the State Contest on Saturday, Dec. 5 at The Ohio State University. During the contest the team members were asked to complete a product development scenario in which they calculated the nutritional facts for a new food product and designed a new package. Also, they completed an aroma identification section, took a written test, responded to a mock customer complaint letter, identified sanitation errors in the food industry, and completed a taste sensory test.
