By DAVE BLOWER JR. Farm World Editor LEWISTOWN, Ohio — Hybrids from Ebberts Field Seeds and Campbell Seed won a corn seed trial in western Ohio earlier this harvest season.
The early season, or 105-110 day CRM, had an average yield of 170 bushels per acre with a moisture content of 20.7 percent. The estimated gross income per acre was $587.70.
Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (F.I.R.S.T.) conducted the test.
The trial was on the Logan County, Ohio farm of Rich and Sam Kinney – R&K Farms.
The soil at this site was a loamy sand. The no-till field was well-drained and non-irrigated. The field was treated with Keystone and Force pest management.
The previous crop was soybeans treated with glyphosate. F.I.R.S.T. manager Rich Schleuning planted the field on May 20 at a rate of 35,500 seeds per acre. He harvested approximately 32,000 corn plants per acre on Nov. 7.
“The crop got off to a good start, then the rain stopped until July 19,” Schleuning explained. “The dry conditions helped set good root mass and depth. The late-season rains made a decent crop.” Ebberts Field Seeds hybrid 2808VT3 took the top spot by producing 182.8 bu. per acre in the early-season test. This variety’s moisture content was 20.8 percent, and it had an estimate gross income of $631.60.
Four other hybrids earned more than 181 bu. per acre, beginning with iCorn.com hybrid 109.6VT3 at 182.3 bu. The iCorn.com product had a moisture content of only 19.4 percent.
Two Specialty Hybrids finished third and fourth. Specialty Hybrids 4958VT3 generated 181.8 bu. per acre with a moisture content of 21.1 percent. Specialty Hybrids 4969VT3 produced 181.7 bu. per acre, and it had a 22.1 percent moisture content. LG Seeds LG2555VT3 was fifth at 181.3 bu. per acre and a 21.9 percent moisture content.
There was a total of 36 hybrids tested at the Lewistown, Ohio site. Late-season test Campbell Seed hybrid 692-86VT3 took top honors in the late-season test. This variety produced 187.1 bu. per acre in the 111-114 day CRM. Its moisture content was 21.5 percent, and the estimated gross income per acre was $643.40.
There were three other hybrids that generated more than 182 bu. per acre. Fielders Choice hybrid NG6818 produced 186.2 bu. per acre, and it had a 23.1 percent moisture content.
Finishing third and fourth were a pair of Stine products. Stine 9806VT3 generated 184.1 bu. per acre, and Stine 9728VT3 had 182.5 bu. acre.
There were 35 hybrids in the late-season trial. “One hybrid was lost when the trial was mistakenly sprayed with Roundup when the surrounding field was treated,” Schleuning reported.
