A-C FFA places in national ag communication contest
AMANDA, Ohio — The Amanda-Clearcreek FFA Agricultural Communications team placed eighth in the nation recently while competing at the National FFA Convention.

The team consisted of Hannah Chenetski, Kelsie Sharp, Andrea Hollett, Emily Cordle and Sarah Vannoy. Vannoy placed 36th in the nation, individually and earned a gold rating. Chenetski, Sharp, Hollett and Cordle all earned silver ratings. This is the fourth time in the last ten years that the Amanda-Clearcreek chapter has placed in the top ten in the nation. In order to be able to compete on a national level, a team has to win their respective state competition. Overall, there were 31 teams that competed this year at the national contest.

The contest consists of an eight page written project proposal with accompanying media materials, a 15-minute audio visual presentation delivered by the group, an editing exercise using the proper AP-style editing marks and a written test on journalism knowledge. In addition each member also has to complete their own individual practicum exercise consisting of the following; news writing, news release, two-minute radio broadcast, two-page graphic design layout and a three-page web design layout.

This team was coached by FFA advisor Scott Sharp.

Alexander FFA team competes in parli-pro
ALBANY, Ohio — On Thursday Nov. 19, the Alexander FFA Chapter attended and competed in the sub-district parliamentrary procedure CDE. The Alexander team consisted of President Kim Holcomb, Vice President Jacob Smith, Secretary Jessie Sinclair, Treasurer Noelle Eveland, Reporter Whitney Mullins, Student Advisor Ethan Syaers, Sentinel Ben Smith; and Lyman Kennedy, Adam Turner, and Courtney Keefer as members.

The competition was held at the Federal Hocking High School. FFA teams that attended the event included Alexander, River Valley, Meigs, Galia, Southern and Symmes-Valley. The Alexander team received 3rd place, and will be moving on to the district competition which will be held on Dec. 1,2009.

Also, on Friday Nov. 20, the Alexander FFA Chapter attended the annual Barnyard Olympics.

The Olympics were held at the River Valley Middle School. Some of the events and competitions that took place include dress your ag teacher like a pirate, a scavenger hunt, pin the eye on the pirate, egg toss, watermelon relay, and also a banana eating relay. The winner of the Olympics was Sheridan FFA Chapter.

Albany- On Saturday November 14th, 2009, members from the Alexander FFA Chapter competed at the annual trapshooting competition. Members that attended include Adam Turner, Courtney Keefer, Ben Smith, Alan Stalder, Mariah Simms, and Chase Meeks. The participating members were successful and the team received a trophy. The Alexander FFA has received the trap shooting trophy for four consecutive years.

Feb. 1 is deadline for Jersey Fred Stout Experience
REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — High school graduates and college students who are preparing for a career in managing and/or marketing registered Jersey cattle are encouraged to apply for the Fred Stout Experience Awards.

Two awards are offered for 2010: (1) a two- or three-month summer internship with Jersey Marketing Service, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and (2) an on-farm, structured internship in Jersey herd management.

The awards honor the memory of Fred J. Stout Jr., Mt. Carmel, Ill., a lifelong Jersey breeder and member of the Jersey Marketing Service staff from 1978 to 1997 who believed that the best learning experiences happen in the everyday world.

To apply, submit a one-page résumé listing work experience, skills and relevant qualifications.

In a separate cover letter state the option you wish to apply for (JMS, on-farm internship, or both).

Discuss your ambitions, goals and career aspirations, including plans for achieving them.

Summarize your previous experience with and continued interest in Registered Jersey™ cattle. Explain how and why the Fred Stout Experience will be of benefit to you in achieving your goals.

Applicants must also request two letters of support, one from an active breeder of registered Jersey (excluding immediate family members), and the other from a teacher, mentor or past employer. These must be mailed directly by the supporters to the AJCA office.
Applications and letters of support must be postmarked no later than Feb. 1, 2010 and addressed to Fred Stout Experience, American Jersey Cattle Association, 6486 E. Main Street, Reynoldsburg, OH 43068-2362.

Previous recipients of the Fred Stout Experience Award are Tara Bohnert, Illinois (2003), Allison Waggoner, South Carolina (2004), Dan Bauer, Wisconsin (2005), Aaron Horst, Pennsylvania (2006), Jacob Pieper, Maryland (2007), Katie Albaugh, Maryland (2008), and Brady Core, Kentucky (2009).
