Too much rain damages yields on an Illinois field

FINDLAY, Ill. — Heavy rain throughout the growing season reduced the potential yields on a corn-hybrid test site in eastern Illinois.
During the early-season test, the average yield was 174.7 bushels per acre, and the full-season test scored a 176.2 bu. per acre average.

The test was conducted by Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (F.I.R.S.T.) earlier this harvest season.
F.I.R.S.T. manager Eric Beyers planted the field at a rate of 36,600 seeds per acre on May 23.

He harvested approximately 35,400 plants per acre on Nov. 14.
“Rain, rain and more rain,” Beyers exclaimed. “High-end yields were cut down by too much water at this site. Although the field is tiled, surface water still sat in some areas. A 3-inch rain on Oct. 29 even delayed the first harvest attempt.”

The test was on the Shelby County, Ill. farm of Dave Shelton. The soil type was a Drummer-Flanagan silt loam. The field was moderately well drained, strip-tilled and non-irrigated.
The pest management plan included Harness Xtra, Roundup PowerMax and Atrazine.

There were 81 hybrids tested at this site.

“There was a one rep minimum planted in twin rows spaced eight inches apart on 30-inch centers,” Beyers explained.

Channel hybrid 210-57VT3 won the early-season test with an average yield of 199.6 bu. per acre. It had a moisture content of 18 percent, and its estimated gross income per acre was $774.40.
Other top yields in this test include: Campbell 682-76VT3, 196.2 bu. per acre; LG Seeds LG2552VT3, 195.7 bu. per acre; Stone 7T765, 195.4 bu. per acre; AgriGold A6456VT3, 194.2 bu. per acre; Dyna-Gro 57V40, 194 bu. per acre; and Trisler T-6N52VT3, 193.9 bu. per acre.

In the full-season test, Channel variety 213-32VT3 took top honors with 209.5 bu. per acre. The hybrid had a moisture content of 20.8 percent, and its estimated gross income was $789.40 per acre.
Kruger K-6213VT3 was second at 207.3 bu. per acre, and LG Seeds LG2620VT3 finished third at 204.7 bu. per acre.
