Miami East names Schindel February FFA Member of the Month
CASSTOWN, Ohio — The February FFA Member of the Month for the Miami East FFA Chapter is Brady Schindel. Schindel is a freshman at Miami East High School and the son of Craig Schindel and Katie Miller.

Schindel recently participated in the State Greenhand Quiz Career Development Event. The Greenhand Quiz tested his knowledge on FFA history and facts. Schindel was the highest placing individual from Miami East.

Schindel’s Supervised Agricultural Experience Program consists of a breeding herd of goats. He raises goats and shows them at the County Fair. He has attended the National FFA Convention, State Greenhand Conference, and Miami East FFA’s ManPower Meeting. Each month the officers of the Miami East FFA Chapter select one member that has actively participated in FFA activities and been a positive role model for fellow FFA members.  The member selected is announced at the monthly FFA meeting, receives a certificate, and choice of a FFA T-shirt.

A-C FFA members compete in District contests
AMANDA, Ohio — You just can’t stop the Amanda-Clearcreek FFA Chapter from competing in all of the contests the Ohio FFA Assoc. has to offer. The advisors try their best to fill every spot on every team. They are very successful at persuading members to participate in the Career Development Events (CDEs), along with the chapter’s officers and upper classmen. It takes a lot to get the younger members to participate in the events.

This year they had an Agricultural Sales team. This CDE tests the students’ knowledge and understanding in the areas of agricultural sales. The contest includes a multiple-choice test about general knowledge of sales, a demonstration of selling a product. There are four practicum areas: telephone skills, advertising and promotion, product display and customer relations. This year’s team consisted of Jennifer Miller, John Miller and Caitlin Robinson. They tied for eighth in the district.

Amanda-Clearcreek FFA also recently participated in the Job Interview CDE. This CDE prepares the members for interviewing for a job so they can be successful adults. This contest is designed to prepare them for the tasks of applying for a job. FFA members have to write a cover letter, prepare a resume, complete a job application, go through an interview and finally write a follow-up letter. This year’s freshman competitor was Kaytie Entler. She placed ninth in the district. Jenna Ferguson also placed ninth in the district, but in the sophomore category. Dan Quincel, the junior contestant, placed fourth in the district. The senior this year was Travis Hart. He placed second in the district.

Dairy Challenge draws students from 15 schools
WOOSTER, Ohio — Students from 15 universities will compete in the sixth Midwest Regional Dairy Challenge, February 11-13 in Wooster, Ohio.

The annual event draws the best and brightest among Midwest college students enrolled in dairy science programs. According to contest chair John Goeser of Vita Plus, 75 students are scheduled to participate in the management analysis and recommendation program. Host for this year’s contest is The Ohio State University.
Over the two-day event, students will work with teammates they have just met to visit a dairy farm and evaluate the business through both observation and interviews with the herd owner and/or manager. Their task is to identify management recommendations, which are then presented to a panel of judges with expertise in dairy management, nutrition and reproduction, animal health and ag business finance.

The Midwest event is one of four regional contests associated with the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge. More than 1,500 students have enhanced their dairy management, communication and business skills through the Dairy Challenge program. Visit www.dairychallenge.org for more information on sponsorship support, or contact Executive Director Molly Kelley at 217-684-3007.
