1956: Champion bull perishes of pneumonia at livestock expo

Paul Canary of Franklin, Ind., was named the Indiana Dairyman of the Year at the recent annual Indiana Dairy Assoc. meeting at Purdue University. Canary raises purebred Jersey cattle on his farm in Johnson County.

Three-time champion Aberdeen-Angus bull Eileenmere 1425 died of pneumonia at the International Livestock Exposition. The bull belonged to J. Garrett Tolan Farms, Pleasant Plains, Ill., and was valued at $50,000.

Josedale Rocket, a trotter racing horse belonging to Mrs. George Wilfong of Willow Branch, is a co-star with Pat Boone in the new movie “April Love.”

The sooner an egg is cooled below 65 degrees after laying and held properly, the slower the quality loss will be. For best results, hold eggs at 50-60 degrees in a relative humidity of 70-80 percent.

Public sale: Since the farm has been sold and dissolving partnership, the personal property will sell in Washington Township, Rush County, belonging to Joe White and Gene Knoy – 39 head of cattle and 375 head of hogs; farm machinery and equipment; hay and stray; and household items.

Purdue University’s collegiate livestock judging team has added the venerable International Livestock Exposition championship to its string of victories this year. The five School of Agriculture seniors earned 4,568 out of a possible 5,000 points. Team members were: J. G. Warfield, Marriottsville, Md.; Arthur Mac Smith, Crawfordsville, Ind.; Jack Nelson, Shipshewana; J. Rex Foxworthy, Crawfordsville; and Mark Love, Hartford City. Alternates were Robin Sheets, Brookston, and Harold McDermit, Elwood. Dr. Roger Hunsley, associate professor of Animal Sciences, is the team coach.

An Indiana seed facility erupted in fiery blaze and is a total loss. Stine Seed Co. of Sheridan, Ind., employed 15-20 people, but no one was injured in the blaze.
