John H. Moorehead, a Union Township, Vanderburgh County farmer, has won the 1957 state five-acre soybean yield contest with a yield of 57 bushels an acre.

H.M. Mullendore of Franklin is one of two pioneer Polled Hereford breeders to be inducted into the breed’s “Hall of Fame” at Ft. Worth, Texas, during the Golden Anniversary National Polled Hereford Show and Sale later this month.

A 19-year old Veedersburg youth, Rich Brewer, is alive today thanks to the quick work of 60 volunteers, a five-foot pipe through which oxygen was pumped and an unidentified man who got a rope around one of his wrists. Brewer was buried for 90 minutes in 7,000 bushels of shelled corn in a bin from which corn was being transferred to a truck, when he toppled into the loose corn and immediately sank out of sight.

An elevator blast near Henderson, Ky., claimed three men’s lives. The elevator is owned by Owensboro Grain Co. and the blast is believed to have been caused by grain dust.

Doug and Marcia Nagel of Rensselaer, Ind., won the American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmer and Rancher award. The award will be presented at the AFB’s annual convention in New Orleans, La., this month.
