1958: Tractors replace dog teams for final run to South Pole

A group of fellow workers from Guide Lamp Division of Anderson gathered at the farm home of Alvin Tinney, Greenfield, and shucked and cribbed his corn left in the field. Mr. Tinney suffered a severe heart attack the week before. This act of kindness for a fellow worker will never be forgotten.

Connersville FFA presents awards: Wendell Hurst was chosen Star Farmer of the Connersville FFA Chapter recently, and Bob Metcalf won first place in the speech contest with his talk on “Training and Showing Beef Cattle.”

Paul Nobbe won first place in the leadership contest, David Caldwell won the essay contest, with his topic of “Money in Farrowing Crates” and Bill Spencer and Jim Rowe won first prize with their exhibit of “Safety with Combines.”

The tractor, which replaced the horse on the American farm, has now replaced the dog team and sled in the ice-clad Antarctic. For the last lap of his historic 1,200-mile trek to the South Pole, Sir Edmund Hillary left his dog teams behind in favor of the three Ferguson farm tractors.

Hoosier farmers plan to increase their corn acreage this year to 5.6 million acres – an 11 percent boost from the 1972 acreage, according to state-federal agricultural statisticians at Purdue University. The state soybean acreage will total 3.7 million acres, the same as last year.

Gladiolus lovers may choose All American beauties for their spring plantings. Big Daddy, Mexicali Rose and Brightside won high honors in the race for this year.

The value of United States agricultural exports is forecast to reach $32 billion in fiscal year 1988, says Marshall A. Martin, Purdue extension agricultural economist. This is a predicted 15 percent increase over last year’s exports.

What’s included in the new Farm Program: 40 percent of estimated deficiency payments, half in cash, half in generic commodity certificates; 0/92 program-no percentage limit on total acreage specified; an optional paid land diversion program for feed grains; and changes in the Uniform Grain Storage Agreement.
Farms for sale: 304 acres in Cass County; 161 acres in Newton County; 162 acres in Warren County; 205 acres in Montgomery County; and 183 acres in Benton County – Farmcraft Service, Oxford, Ind.

A group called West Michigan Co-Gen was issued a $15,000 grant to the farmers to help pay for a feasibility study concerning building a power plant, that should convert waste from farm animals into electricity, steam and fertilizer while reducing pollution in lakes and streams.

Judy Marbaugh, Steve Lefeld, Mike Lefeld, Carol Feltz, Paul Lefeld, Ken Lefeld and Dan Lefeld, all children of the company’s founder, the late Paul Lefeld Sr., are partners in the business.
