1958: Henry Co. fire consumes English heirlooms

Fred Abshire and his family of Springport, Henry County, suffered a $10,000 loss when his farm home was destroyed. Most of the furnishings were safe, but Mrs. Abshire, an English war bride, lost some of her treasured keepsakes from England.

Research workers on the Purdue Farm Cardiac project have found about 21 percent of the white-male fatalities from heart disease in Indiana occur to farmers and farm workers, who comprise only 14.4 percent of the working population. The explanation suggested by the Purdue University agricultural economists is the high average age of the farm group, about 50, makes them more susceptible to chronic diseases.

Four members of the Connersville Future Farmers of America chapter will be honored this summer at the Indiana State Convention, where they will receive the Hoosier Farmer Degree. The boys are Jack Bunyard, Tim Lingg, Mike Devor and Danny Lamberson.

Since before the time of the white man, black walnut has been one of the most highly-prized forest trees of the Midwest and eastern portions of our country. To the American Indian, walnuts offered a source of food, the nut husks were used for dyeing purposes and its evenly-splitting grain gave the wood a great usefulness for tool handles and other implements.

Three men were inducted into the Indiana Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame, where their portraits will be on display in the Lilly Life Sciences Building at Purdue. They are David Garriott, Scottsburg beef cattleman; E.F. “Bud” Alderson, a Quarter Horse breeder from Sharpsville; and Ralph W. House, an Arcadia native who raises Belgian horses. His father also had been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Kaye Whitehead, a Delaware County farmer, has been appointed to the Indiana ASCS committee. Sen. Richard Lugar requested the appointment. She will be serving along with George Corya of Commiskey, Warren Scheidt of Columbus, Carol Brown of Lafayette and Lawrence Carter of Hebron.

George Buckham, a Kalamazoo County, Mich., farmer, had a ewe give birth to five healthy lambs. According to Maury Kaercher, Michigan extension agent, it is common for multiple births in sheep, but to have five healthy, good-sized lambs is unusual.
