1958: Fed. Land Bank dropping farm interest rate to 5 percent

The Federal Land Bank has lowered its interest rate to 5 percent on all farm loans already in effect, according to Lawrence Kerhof, secretary-treasurer of the Riley National Farm Loan Assoc. at Greenfield.

Grand Champion Poland China gilt was exhibited by Mapes and Lethaman of Unionville Center, Ohio, and sold for $320 at the recent Eastern Poland China Hi-Lite Show and Sale. The Grand Champion Boar was exhibited by Don E. Orr and Sons of Tipton, Ind., and brought $185.

Fayette Junior Leaders met with Dale Edwin Pflum and David M. Caldwell, giving a demonstration on “Nursing Pigs from Two Weeks to Eight Weeks.” Pledges were led by Joe Wiley and Joe Caldwell, and Linda Williams led group singing, while Paul Nobbe, president, presided.

Kaye Whitehead, a Delaware County, Ind., farmer, has been appointed to the Indiana ASCS committee. U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar requested the appointment. She will be serving along with George Corya of Commiskey, Warren Scheidt of Columbus, Carl Brown of Lafayette and Lawrence Carter of Hebron.

More than 1,400 fourth-grade students from Delaware County schools recently visited the Delaware County National Agriculture Farm Festival Days at the fairgrounds in Muncie. Another 1,400 children from various scout troops, nursery schools and with parents also took part in the tours. The event was sponsored by the 80-member Farm Festival committee, according to coordinator Jane Hartley.

Master Farmer Awards were bestowed upon the following Hoosiers: pork producers Bob Johnson of Frankfort in Clinton County and Larry Pumphrey of Greensburg in Decatur County; beef producer Harry Armstrong of Springville in Lawrence County; and crops farmer Carl Martin of Knightstown in Henry County. This annual award was established in 1968 by Indiana Prairie Farmer.

The Janssen brothers, Tim and Dave, and Butch Heiden of Monroe, Mich., were named Red Gold, Inc. “Grower of the Year” at the company’s recent Growers’ Banquet in Indianapolis, Ind., in conjunction with Purdue’s Horticulture Congress.
