A Spotted Poland China boar and gilt, purchased from the Florea & Heck herd of Fayette County, was being shipped to Africa by Lutheran missionary Mrs. Marion T. Miller of Monrovia, Liberia. The gilt was reportedly doing well, but the boar became victim of extreme heat and died before getting there.

The trip was a 5,000-mile journey by rail and sea.
Winter wheat production in Indiana is forecast at 37,584,000 bushels, which is 16 percent above last year, according to Purdue University statisticians.

Bill Conder of Hagerstown and Cap Prewett of Eaton won two of the top individual awards at the annual convention of the FFA held at Purdue. Conder won the essay contest and Prewett, the public speaking contest.

Beginning May 1 Indiana shoppers will no loner pay sales tax on the purchase of most food for home consumption, according to the Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Revenue, Donald Clark.

Indiana farmers for the first time in history likely will plant more than four million acres of soybeans this spring, says Marvin Searingin, Purdue extension agronomist. This will represent about one-third of the state’s tillable acres.
