Underwood celebrates first 10 years in music

Rural Route Music by Bluegrass Johnson

BITTER SWEET, Ky. — I must admit I’m not a huge fan of the reality shows that go in search of undiscovered talent dreaming of becoming the newest music stars.
And there seems to be a growing number of them. With that said, I must also admit that occasionally those shows pan out and have discovered some of the best new artists in a number of musical genres. Carrie Underwood has to be one of, if not the biggest, stars to have come from the reality show circuit.
I can’t help but believe she would have been discovered anyway; but regardless of how it happened, the country music world is much better off with Underwood in it – not just because she’s got a killer voice but because she’s a good person. When I saw that she was about to release a greatest hits album, called Greatest Hits: Decade No. 1, I thought to myself, “no way has she been belting out one hit after another for 10 years.”
But indeed she burst on the scene in 2005 after becoming the fourth American Idol winner. Her debut album, Some Hearts, featured the hit Jesus, Take the Wheel among others setting the stage for a string of No. 1 hits and stardom beyond belief.
Her greatest hits collection contains a new song called Something in the Water, another song inspired by faith. That single, released on Sept. 29, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart and climbed to No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart after just two weeks.
I’m pretty sure this new song is destined to be one of her biggest hits, if early reaction is any indication. Underwood is a singer who goes all out in everything she sings; she doesn’t leave anything on the table.
That is especially true, I think, when she sings a good, old-fashioned hymn. I suggest you do an Internet search of the song How Great Thou Art performed by Underwood and Vince Gill. You’ll see what I mean. But country music stars have never shied away from singing about their faith. In fact, there was a time when many artists recorded complete gospel music albums.
For me, I like it. However, regardless of your beliefs, this song and this album will please all Underwood fans and likely make new ones. And did I mention she’s a good person. Imagine if every person on earth was a good person! Need I say more? Having a great voice is just the icing on the cake for Carrie Underwood and she deserves a 100, A+.

Bluegrass Johnson comes from a long line of country music performers and enjoys a passion for the rhythm and melody. Readers with questions or comments may write to Johnson in care of this publication.
