Fort Loramie FFA participates in Food Science CDE
FORT LORAMIE, Ohio — The Fort Loramie (Ohio) FFA sent two teams recently to the District 5 contest for the Food Science and Technology CDE.  
Members competed in a team activity to develop a food product, design the product label, answer a series of questions and calculate a nutrition fact label for the product.
Each member also worked individually by taking an online written exam, completing aroma and taste tests, categorizing customer complaint letters, and identifying safety and sanitation problems in food processing facilities.
Team 1, consisting of Elizabeth Kunkler, Andrea Meyer, Makenzie Ranly and Amanda Seger, placed 9th out of the 40 teams present. Elizabeth Kunkler ranked 5th overall as an individual.


Two Michigan school districts receive food grants
DETROIT, Mich. (AP) — Two Michigan school districts have each received nearly $100,000 in federal grants to bring locally grown food to school cafeterias.
The USDA announced the grants to Detroit Public Schools and the Waterford School District on Dec. 2. Detroit schools will receive $97,000 while Waterford schools will get $98,000 through the department’s Farm to School Program.
The program helps schools source healthy foods including fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy, and also educates students through school garden programs and farm visits. U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) said the program gives needed supported to Michigan farmers while encouraging students to eat healthy foods.
Detroit Public Schools said the grant will impact its 62,000 students and their communities.
