Month of webinars to help Ohio sheep, goat farmers

By CELESTE BAUMGARTNER

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Sheep and Goat Webinar series co-sponsored by Ohio State University Extension, the Ohio Sheep Improvement Assoc. (OSIA) and the Ohio University Sheep Team will take place on Monday evenings in February from 7 to 9 p.m.
Sheep and goat producers and anyone who is interested can gather in the remote webinar locations listed here. They will watch the speakers on computer screens and have a chance to ask them questions about the topic being discussed. “It gives them a little bit of back and forth as far as questions, but we don’t have all of the expenses of mileage,” said Roger High, OSIA director. “We can get good information out to our producers. This year we have three speakers from Ohio State University, and one of our speakers is from the University of Maryland.”
The first speaker, on Feb. 2, is Clif Little, Guernsey County extension agent. Little will talk about tips for fine tuning a producer’s flock and herd FAMACHA (FAffaa MAlan CHArt – a deworming program).
On Feb. 9, Dr. Eric Gordon, associate professor of veterinary clinical medicine at Ohio State, will talk about managing major sheep and goat diseases.
On Feb. 16, Dr. Bill Weiss, Ohio State animal sciences, will give tips for reducing feed losses from silage and hay.
On Feb. 23, Susan Schoenian, University of Maryland small ruminant specialist, will discuss improving lambing and kidding percentages: management, genetics, and selection.
“During or after the program, there is usually some participant discussion about the issue in the discussion,” High said.
“That is what is nice about getting a group together. They can discuss issues they’ve had with these topics, or they can get a little more extensive into the discussion.
“We’ve got a good program, and hopefully everybody gets to take part in our program this year and see,” he said.
