1965: 50 years ago

Ishmael Knoy, trustee of Center Township in northern Rush County, met with his advisory board, school board and Raymond Hay, Mays principal, to discuss school reorganization possibilities. The group recommended Center be accepted into the Rushville Consolidated School Corp. Present high school enrollment there is down 20 pupils from last year and more each year following, because of no longer receiving high school students from Gings, Raleigh and Jackson schools.

Many area farmers report heavy infestations of corn flea beetles in their field and sweet corn this year.

Champions in Parliamentary procedure were the boys of the Hagerstown FFA chapter. They won the District 9 contest and then went on to win the Section 3 contest. Team members were Dan Howell, Donn Baker, Max Smith, Larry Smith, Mike Doerstler, Dion Ammerman, Mark Mendenhall, Bob Clark, Steve Davis and Jim Doerstler.

Based on conditions as of first of May, Indiana’s anticipated production of winter wheat is forecast at 63 million bushels, the highest on record dating back to 1866.

Arson is being investigated as the cause of the fire that caused an estimated $150,000 damage at the Karl Tellman farm complex near Columbus, Ind., recently. Four large storage and livestock barns containing hay and 500-600 piglets and hogs were destroyed in the fire.

A team of students from Purdue University won first place at this year’s national marketing competition hosted by the National Agri-Marketing Assoc. in Phoenix.
