‘Goats Love Oats’ cooking/baking contest entries being sought

VEVAY, Ind. — Switzerland County Tourism invites budding cooks and bakers to enter a dish or dessert in its "Goats Love Oats" cooking and baking contest.

The competition coincides with the July 11 inaugural Fred the Goat Festival. The event will be held at the Switzerland County Visitors Center and Liberty Street in downtown Vevay.

Cooked or baked entries must contain either oats or oatmeal and should be hand-delivered to the Switzerland County Visitors Center, located at 128 West Main Street in Vevay, no later than 11 a.m. Entries will be judged by appearance and taste beginning at noon.

Cooks and/or bakers of the winning recipes receive gift certificates to a local business of the winners’ choosing for first ($50), second ($25) and third ($15) places. Gift certificates will be available for pickup within two weeks of the end of the contest.

The Fred the Goat Festival event takes place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. around the historic Switzerland County Courthouse Square. It features the "Goats Gone Wild" art contest, a Farmer’s Obstacle Course, Kidd Calling Contest, a storyteller and more.

Fred was a white goat that once roamed Vevay Hill in Switzerland County. Residents were often seen searching the hillside for Fred in hopes of taking photographs to upload to his Facebook page. Since his death in late 2013, Fred is now immortalized by a white concrete statue placed in his honor. The festival is a tribute to his memory.

Music group My Brother’s Keeper will be performing from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. A "Find Fred" mural will be on display at the Community Art Center located at the corner of Main and Ferry Street in Vevay.

For more information on the festival’s contests, local lodging and county businesses, contact the Switzerland County Visitors Center at 812-427-3237, log on to www.switzcotourism.com or join the "Switzerland County Tourism-Vevay, IN" and "Fred the Goat Festival-Vevay, IN" Facebook pages.
