Purdue University’s Animal Sciences Department has purchased an interest in one of the Midwest’s top Hereford sires. The bull, TR Husker Rupert 15, is owned jointly with Fairview Farms, Washington.

A total of 16 consignors brought 214 head of lambs to the first lamb pool of this year, held at the local Producers Marketing Assoc. stockyard in Centerville, Ind. The top-grade lambs brought $27 per cwt.

Purdue opened its new Pest Diagnostic Laboratory. Anyone – gardeners, home-owners, commercial growers, agribusiness people – can send insects or plants for identification or diagnosis to the laboratory, said Melidie Putnam, its director.

2005: 10 years ago

 

CountryMark Cooperative celebrated a milestone with implications for both agricultural and energy at its distribution terminal north of Indianapolis in Hamilton County. The co-op has distributed more than 1 million gallons of pure soy biodiesel, which is commonly blended into co-op fuels as B2, B5 and B20. That translates to almost 50 million gallons of blended soy biodiesel.

Ohio communities now have a new tool for protecting farmland through the Ohio Agricultural Security Area Program, which will commit local governments to prohibit non-farm development when it’s requested by the landowners, said ODA.
