Kentucky’s Renfro Valley a special rural hide-away

BITTERSWEET, Ky. — For those of us who love live music and special venues in which to see our favorite country stars, do I have a treat for you.

Nestled away in rural, south central Kentucky is a special place known as Renfro Valley. If you’re from my neck of the woods, you know all about it; but if you’re not, this is one place that needs to make your list of special musical destinations to visit.

For the last 75 years, the Renfro Valley Barn Dance has been seen by countless country music lovers, and its Renfro Valley Gatherin’ radio show has been on the air every Sunday since 1943. In fact, it is second only to the Grand Ole Opry as the longest-running, continuous radio music show in the country.

Logistically, the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center is a 55-acre complex located near Interstate 75 in Rockcastle County. The facility includes two music theatres, a shopping area, a church and two restaurants.

I remember my father taking our family there when I was a child. The place has grown quite a bit since then but the idea is still the same; bringing great family entertainment to all who visit.

Many country music stars have graced the Renfro Valley stage including Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Glen Campbell, Travis Tritt, Ronnie Milsap, Charlie Daniels, and the list goes on and on.

In addition to these legends, there is a regular cast of entertainers that perform, as well. One of the things I like most about this place is the fact that it does bring local and regional musicians to the stage. And it has served as a launching pad for some of those locals who have moved up the ladder of stardom.

If holiday music is something you like, Renfro Valley offers Christmas shows starting in late November. I plan on making this year’s holiday show because I love Christmas music, but that’s another story. My point is, there’s just so much to experience here throughout the year, and it is situated in a beautiful rural setting.

Oh, did I mention the bluegrass festival every summer! I believe it was a bluegrass show I saw that very first visit so many years ago. Renfro Valley holds many fond memories for me as I’m sure it does for others. Kentucky’s Capital of Country Music isn’t a big place, but it’s a special place and one I’m sure you’ll want to come back to over and over again.

For the great entertainment and the wonderful memories it has provided me, Renfro Valley gets a giant A+ in my classroom. For more information, go to their website at www.renfrovalley.com
