1965: 50 years ago
Real estate for sale: 325-acre Franklin County beef and hog farm, better than half is tillable, balance extra good bluegrass pasture, spread out enough so as to be taken care of by machinery. This farm has extra good house and barns, and because of the owner’s recent heart attack and inability to work it you can have it for about $200 per acre – Maucher Realty, Inc., Harrison, Ohio.
Feeder pig report from Springfield, Ill.: Interior markets throughout Illinois last week was mostly 50 cents to $1.00 higher than the previous week. Following on per-head basis: good and mostly choice 25-40 pounds, $14-$17; choice 40-60 pounds, $16.75-$21.75; choice 60-70 pounds, $21-$23.50; choice 70-90 pounds, $23-$26; and few choice 90-115 pounds, $26-$32.75.
Two tractors, two combines and a plow were damaged in vandalism which occurred at the Dennis Implement Co. at Indiana Route 3 north of New Castle. Damage is estimated at $3,500. One tractor was driven over rough ground and rocks and, finally, into a tree.
 
1975: 40 years ago

Six head of beef cattle were stolen recently from the Birna Adams farms near Connersville, Ind. Adams reported to the state police that the cattle weighed between 800-1,000 pounds each and estimated their value at $1,800. He said a lock had been cut on the gate to the feed lot and a truck backed up to a loading dock to load the animals.
The original golf ball was made of leather and stuffed with boiled goose feathers that fell apart in rain.  The Rev. Robert Patterson invented the gutta ball in 1845. It was made from gutta percha, a latex from trees, and bouncy like rubber. Then came the bouncing billies in 1899 – rubber balls that could bounce 25 yards further than the gutta ball and which, in time, were refined into the balls used today.

Six volunteers were honored as “Friends of Extension” during the annual Extension Staff Conference at Purdue University: Martha and Henry Daniel of Monroe County, Danita Rodibaugh of Jasper County, Lee and Carol Riggs of Vanderburgh County and Ed Veehuizen of Hancock County.
The value of the 1990 Kentucky tobacco crop should be more than $700 million, said Will Snell, an extension agricultural economist in the UK College of Agriculture. Average market prices probably will be higher than $1.70 per pound for the first time since 1984, with limited supplies being placed under government loan.
For the time being, all U.S. pork shipments to European Community member countries have been halted. The EC contends no U.S. packing plants meet their sanitation requirements.
