ILLINOIS

INDIANA

Sept. 23: The Hoosier Sheep Symposium will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the O.V. Winks Building at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Noblesville, Ind. Sept. 25-30: The 71st annual Mitchell Persimmon Festival will begin with a candlelight tour on Sept. 23 at Spring Mill State Park’s Pioneer Village. KENTUCKY

Sept. 22-24: Marion County Country Ham Days will be from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in downtown Lebanon, Ky. The festival, which began in 1969, serves more than 4,000 pounds of ham to more than 40,000 visitors each year. Sept. 23-24: The annual Music & Molasses Arts & Crafts Festival returns to the Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville, Tenn. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7 at the gate and $6 if purchased in advance online. Children aged 3 and under are free. Ellington Agricultural Center is 10 miles south of Nashville. Oct. 3: A pasture walk has been scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on a farm south of the intersection of State Road 26 and County Road 950 East in Upland, Ind. The event will include discussions about rotational grazing, grasses and legumes, and winter grazing. Oct. 3: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will host a public meeting titled Development of a List of Dietary Ingredients that Pre-Date the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. The meeting will go grom 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the CFSAN Wiley Auditorium, 5001 Campus Dr. in College Park, Md. The FDA is accepting public comments on this meeting. Oct. 3-5: Learn how to increase pasture productivity by attending the grazing basics workshop at the Ohio State University ATI campus in Wooster, Ohio. The workshop features morning classroom sessions combined with afternoon hands-on learning, demonstrations and practice sessions in the field. The cost of the workshop is $150 per person, which includes a grazing notebook, a pasture measurement stick, additional handouts, lunches and refreshments. A second person from a farm operation sharing a notebook is an additional $100. Pre-registration is required by Sept. 25. Oct. 6: The public is invited to the University of Tennessee’s East Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center for the Ag in the Foothills Field Day. The free event will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center’s Blount Unit at 4341 UT Farm Road in Louisville, Tenn. The event will feature a tradeshow and lunch. Oct. 7: The Indiana Hand Corn Husking Contest will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Craig Geyer farm, 20565 Tyler Road in Bremen, Ind. This contest is open to all who enjoy old-fashioned corn husking. Participants in the timed contest will husk corn from one row, throwing the ears into a horse-drawn wagon. The corn is weighed and inspected for excess husks. Oct. 15-16: The Kingwood Center Gardens in Mansfield, Ohio will glow with the lights of thousands of jack-o’-lanterns during the Great Pumpkin Glow. Now entering its 7th year, this event is back with more pumpkins plus live music, local vendors and the Scarecrow Row walking path. The Great Pumpkin Glow is open from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday, 5-9 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available online at kingwoodcenter.org for $6 or $8 at the gate.

Oct. 21: The Fall Folklore Jamboree will be at the University of Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Milan, Tenn. More than 100 folk artists and musicians will gather to re-create rural Tennessee from years gone by. The Fall Folklore Jamboree is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 3-12. Park at Milan High School and buses will escort visitors to the admission booth. Oct. 25-27: University of Tennessee Extension will present a workshop designed to help poultry farmers learn the basics of backyard poultry production and how to manage the risks of on-farm poultry processing. The workshop will be: Oct. 25 in Pikeville, Tenn.; Oct. 26 in Newport; and Oct. 27 in Jasper.

The workshop in Pikeville and Jasper will begin at 10 a.m. and in Newport at 4:30 p.m. All times are local. Check-in and networking will start 30 minutes prior to these times and the training will last about two hours. The pre-registration deadline for Pikeville is Oct. 18; Newport is Oct. 16; and Jasper is Oct. 20. Pre-registration is required as space is limited and a meal is provided. Oct. 27-28: The Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Assoc., in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois State Fair Foundation, will host the Haunted Ethnic Illinois Wine Festival in Ethnic Village, Ill. at the State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill. from 6-10 p.m. Oct. 27 and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 28. Illinois wineries will showcase their wines along with ethnic foods.

Cajun, German, Italian, Irish, Mexican, Jamaican ethnic foods will be served. The event will have beer available, as well. A portion of the proceeds will assist the Illinois Grape & Wine Industry, the Illinois State Fair Foundation and the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The price is $25 plus fees in advance and $30 at the door for both days. Wristbands will be issued and the festival may be enjoyed for both days if the wristband is not removed.
