VERONA, Ky. — Siblings Nicholas and Joachim Brueggemann have established a niche of supplying donkey milk to their herd share owners. This drink is said to be wonderfully appropriate for people who may be allergic to cow’s milk protein or who would like to increase their immune system.  Donkey milk is high in nutrients and has a composition that is similar to human milk.  The milk contains essential fatty acids that work as powerful anti-aging and healing properties.  It also contains antibacterial properties which is effective in healing skin irritation and eczema according to the Brueggemanns.
People have been drinking donkey milk for thousands of years.  It is more popular in European countries and has been growing across the United States.  Referring back to history, Hippocrates reportedly used it as a treatment for arthritis, coughs, and wounds.  Cleopatra is said to have maintained her soft, smooth skin with donkey milk baths.
With their current donkey herd of 30, they are hand milking two Jennies twice a day gathering between 8 and 30 ounces of milk per day. Through Sweet Donkey Milk of Kentucky, Milk Herd Share members are charged a fee and become share owners of these animals.
“A trial period is recommended to see if this specialty raw milk is supplying the results you expect since the cost of donkey milk is around $12.50 for eight ounces,” Nicholas said.
