WARSAW, Ind. – Purdue University Extension is offering a livestock care workshop in May designed to teach attendees skills such as how to properly give injections and apply ear tags.

In addition, participants will learn about the importance of having a relationship with their veterinarian, said Emily Kresca, Kosciusko County Extension agriculture and natural resources educator.

The Ladies Night Out – Hands-On Training For Healthy Herds workshop is 6 p.m.-8 p.m. May 21 at the Kosciusko County Extension office in Warsaw. The cost is $20 per person and includes dinner and all program supplies. Potential attendees are asked to register by May 14.

The program is open to women and men, and anyone is welcome, Kresca said. “We are calling it ladies night out in hopes to build women in agriculture skills,” she explained. “We are also hoping to build a network of women in agriculture.”

The Extension office is partnering with a local large animal veterinarian to present the workshop. The skills offered will cover all livestock species.

The workshop would benefit both new and beginning farmers, and longer-term producers, Kresca said.

“This is a great opportunity for new/beginning farmers to learn about needed livestock skills and for advanced farmers to brush up on their skills,” she noted. “This is also a great way to meet new people and build a network of other women in agriculture. We will be providing dinner and time for fellowship to get to know other attendees. This is a great opportunity to build your skills and build connections.”

The workshop can also be a great opportunity for 4-H members and high school and college students looking to enter into the livestock industry, Kresca added.

Workshop organizers would like to see a minimum of 10 attendees, she said. They are hoping for at least 15 in attendance.

This will be the second Ladies Night Out workshop offered by Kosciusko County Extension. “The first one we did back in September 2023 that focused on the entrepreneurship opportunity of having a cut flower farm,” Kresca said. “Those that attended also had the opportunity to make their own flower arrangement. We hosted it at a local cut flower farm in Bremen (Ind.).”

She said they plan to have workshops quarterly during the year. Each will focus on a different topic.
