The Aug. 12 crop report estimated Indiana corn would average 158 bushels per acre compared to 2014’s yield of 188. Soybean yields were also projected to decrease from 56 bushels in 2014 to 49 this year.

Much needed rain fell over parts of Michigan, although parts of western Michigan received a half-inch and even less in some areas. Much of the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan remain dry and in need of significant rainfall.

Topsoil moisture in the state was 3 percent very short, 25 percent short, 66 percent adequate and 6 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were 3 percent very short, 24 percent short, 66 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus.

Tobacco continues to decline, although the recent dry spell has helped. Crop conditions were reported to be 8 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 49 percent good and 7 percent excellent.  Last year at this time, tobacco was rated as 69 percent good to excellent.

“Generally, things look pretty good across the state, with 82 percent of corn and 77 percent of soybeans rated as good to excellent condition.”

The report, however, stated some farmers reported crops showing stress due to the dry weather, as well as signs of sudden death syndrome (SDS) in soybean fields.
