As the calendar entered mid-August, Illinois growers continued to see increased damage done from excess precipitation from the prior two months, as more than half of the state’s soybean crop was rated fair or worse.
Dry conditions throughout the week, with precipitation not arriving until the weekend, allowed Iowa farmers 5.5 suitable days for fieldwork for the week ending Aug. 9, according to the Aug. 10 Iowa Crop & Weather report, with seed corn detasseling nearing completion across much of Iowa.
Tobacco harvest is under way, hampered by above-normal rainfall. According to the Aug. 10 crop and progress condition report from the Kentucky field office of NASS, the state received 1.21 inches of rainfall during the previous week.
Tennessee farmers were glad to see rain give their crops a boost near the end of the week of Aug. 9. Crops across the state have developed well, despite earlier dry conditions; however, the rain delayed hay harvest, according to NASS’ weekly report.
