POLO – The sport of kings. A game played on horseback by two teams of four players each, who attempt to drive a small wooden ball through the opponent’s goal with long mallets.
POLOIST — A person who plays polo and is numbered from one to four according to their position. Player No. 1 is the offensive player. Player No. 2 is the offensive midfielder. Player No. 3 is the pivot player (the highest-rated player on the field). Player No. 4 is the defensive back..
BUMP – When a player rides into another to ruin a shot. This is legal, provided the angle of collision is no more than 45 degrees.
CHUKKER – A period in a polo game lasting seven minutes, plus to up 30 seconds in overtime. Each game has six chukkers.
DIVOT STOMP – During halftime, spectators are encouraged to stomp, or replace, mounds of dirt displaced by the horses during the game.
HOOK – When a player ruins another’s shot by placing the mallet in the striking player’s way.
KNOCK-IN – When the defending team resumes the game with a free hit from their back line, after the offense hits the ball across the opponent’s back line.
NECKSHOT – A ball hit from either side under the horse’s neck.
UMPIRES – Two officials on horseback who impose penalty only when in agreement. If an agreement is not reached, they consult with the sideline referee. |
