Illinois plow days celebrate autumn

By CINDY LADAGE

FARMERSVILLE, Ill. — Nothing announces “It’s fall” like a plow day, and the Waldeck family hosted its annual event on Oct. 16. This was started by Adam Waldeck, an FFA member, who began the plow day as an outreach of his FFA activity and antique tractor passion. Adam is now a miner out of high school, but the event he loves lives on.

The Waldecks cooked pork chops on the grill while antique tractor enthusiasts worked the ground across the street.

While the Waldecks like John Deere green, tractors of all makes and models were part of the day’s festivities. The blue skies and seasonal temperatures were the perfect background for farmers that day. The plow day offers those with a variety of occupations to turn the soil and reminisce on memories from their youth, or imprint new ones with their old iron.

Several tractor owners were letting those without machinery take a turn at the wheel and pull some steel through the black, fertile ground.

On Oct. 23, Jim and Celia Edwards of Waverly, Ill., also had their annual plow day. The couple, who own draft horses, had a combination horse and tractor plow day.

After rain early on, the clouds broke and the day went as planned. The Edwards also hosted a chili dinner with all the trimmings. A horse-pulled wagon and campfire are always big draws for those who come each year to visit, watch and, of course, plow.
