Chapter Advisors: Ms. Melissa Muhlenkamp, Ms. Brittany Bridges and Mr. Cody Linville
Number of FFA Members: 163
Chapter Charter Date: Jan. 8, 1976

History of Chapter: Before there was a Jay County FFA, there were eight high schools in the county of Jay. Only three of these high schools had an FFA chapter. These schools were the Portland Wayne district, Pennville district, and Madison district. Madison’s chapter ended in the 1950s right before the school closed. But, the other two chapters were still in gear until the consolidation of the eight high schools into one – Jay County High School - in 1975.

What classes are taught to FFA members?: Our ag-related classes taught at Jay County High School are: Ag Mechanization I & II, Ag Fabrication, Farm Management, Small and Large Animal Science, Advanced Life Science-Animals, Fundamentals of Agriculture, SAE, Landscape Management, Greenhouse Production, Horticulture and Advanced Life Science-Plants.

What contests does the chapter participate in?: Jay County FFA participates in many area contests such include: Soil Judging, Equine Judging, Entomology Judging, Livestock Judging, Dairy Judging, Wildlife Management, Poultry Judging, Crop Judging, Food Science Judging, Forestry Judging, Parliamentary Procedures and Meats Judging.

Highest awards given to the chapter: Our chapter has received numerous awards, some of our greatest accomplishments are our Top 10 Chapter Award, Models of Innovation (community), 1st place Breaking New Grounds award, Superior Chapter Award, Three-Star National Chapter.

Does the chapter have an ag plot? If so, amount of acres and crops produced?: We own 27 acres of crops, with this land we produce soybeans, wheat, corn and popcorn.

What is your biggest fundraiser?: Every year, we host a work experience auction. We invite FFA members’ parents, our FFA board and alumni and local business owners to attend this event. We serve to them a free pork chop dinner, and only ask for donations or buy our members in return. When our members are bought they work eight hours for their buyer’s to gain work experience.
What is your chapter’s strength?: Jay County FFA has a great strength in community involvement. Every year we do a book drive, canned food drive, and community clean-up. Also, the chapter participates in many community events.

Most unique fact about your chapter?: The most unique fact that the Jay County FFA has to offer is that it has three advisors. Another thing is that every member has an SAE or Supervised Agriculture Experience, which reflects member’s interest and career goals. With this all-year-round program, member’s receive hands-on training, as well as goal-setting, planning, and record keeping skills.

Favorite community service project? We do many community service projects, but the one that means the most to us is the book drive.
FFA members and other high school students have the chance to donate their old children’s books. These books bring joy to kids’ faces and also, helps the children learn how to read. Last year, our chapter collected 2,100 children’s books.

Is there a parent, community person or teacher that has done outstanding service for the chapter? Tell us about it: Our very own FFA Advisor - Melissa Muhlenkamp - was announced the Ag Teacher of the Year Award in the state of Indiana. The Jay County FFA would like to thank her for all her hard work and seeing our potential, and would also like to say “Congratulations!”

What else would you like to tell us?: One interesting fact that we have is that our advisors all graduated college in different states of each other. Ms. Melissa Muhlenkamp graduated from a college in Ohio. Ms. Brittany Bridges graduated from a university in Indiana. Mr. Cody Linville graduated from a school in Kentucky.
