MACOMB, Ill. — Seed brands from four different companies took the top three spots, for two recent corn tests, on a farm in McDonough County, Ill.
A seed brand from a fifth company came in fourth for its yield, but third for average gross income per acre on the second test. The tests were conducted by Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (F.I.R.S.T.) at the farm of Jerry Lewis in Macomb.

For the early season test, LG Seeds LG2555VT3 took first place, with an average yield of 242.3 bushels per acre and an average gross income per acre of $1,000.10. Channel 210-61VT3 took second place, with an average yield of 237.5 bushels per acre and an average gross income per acre of $986.80.
Stone 6N52VT3 took third place, with an average yield of 236.6 bushels per acre and an average gross income per acre of $984.80.

For this test, 36,300 seeds per acre were planted on May 6 and 34,000 plants per acre were harvested Sept. 29.

“Fields in the area are yielding from 30 to 230 bushels per acre,” said Eric Beyers, F.I.R.S.T. manager for central and southern Illinois. “Low-lying areas of the field held too much rainfall.

“The shady wet soil surface between the corn rows in the plot was carpeted with an Irish-hued moss. Lodging scores consist of stalk lodging, root lodging and green snapping.”

For the full season test, AgriGold A6553VT3 came in first with an average yield of 252.5 bushels per acre and an average gross income per acre of $1,028.90. LG Seeds LG2620VT3 came in second with an average yield of 234.8 bushels per acre and an average gross income per acre of $956.20.

Channel 213-32VT3 took third place with an average yield of 231.6 bushels per acre, but this took fourth place for gross income, with an average per acre of $940.90. Great Lakes 6455G3VT3 took the fourth spot for yield, but came in third for income, with an average gross income per acre of $943.20.

About 36,300 seeds per acre were planted for this test on May 6 and 33,200 plants were harvested Sept. 29.
