Farmers put in the longest work week, the Census Bureau reports: Farmers and farm managers worked an average of 57.2 hours in mid-1955, while non-agricultural industries had 41 hours average of work in 1955. Farm laborers’ work week dropped from 53 hours to 50 between 1947 and 1955.
W.O. Pope, Greenfield, Ind., has traded his 88-acre farm two miles south of Greenfield for the 104-acre farm of Chester A. Gates, which adjoins the Greenfield airport. Gates also received $20,000 in the deal.
Ralph Cochran of Shelby County is the next vice president of the Indiana Oxford Sheep Breeders Assoc.

Certificates of Distinction from Purdue University’s Ag Alumni Assoc. were presented at the recent Ag Alumni Fish Fry to Glen E. Lehker, Purdue extension entomologist; Secretary of Agriculture Clifford M. Hardin; Harold W. McMillen, recently retired chair of the board of Central Soya, Fort Wayne; and Eric A. Holm, Purdue 4-H staff member.
Fountaintown firemen were called to the barn blaze at the Harold Brune farm, in Shelby County. Twenty-two head of registered show stock sheep and a number of lambs perished in the barn; other losses included a hay baler, a new wagon filled with a load of corn and 10 tons of hay. Cause of the blaze remains undetermined and no estimate on the contest has been made yet.
Operating costs for tractors and farm machinery have increased an average of 10 percent since 1969, according to Dale O. Hull, extension agricultural engineer at Iowa State University. Most of the increase can be attributed to higher repair costs and higher gasoline cost.

Dave Kilmer of Monticello was named Pork All-American at the 1986 Indiana Pork Producers meeting in Indianapolis. Recipients of the Outstanding Young Pork Producer awards were Kent Need, Frankfort; Donald Lehe, Brookston; and Delbert and Harold Turner, Van Buren. This award is presented to producers from 25-40 years of age who have excelled in leadership, production efficiency and community service.
Clinton Central High School’s Future Farmers of America dairy foods judging team won first placing in the state 4-H/FFA Dairy Foods Judging Contest held recently at Purdue University. The winning team consists of Lucinda Davis, Wade Roberts, Neal Stock and Ellen Sheets; the coach was Ralph Walker.
J.E. Dean Sales, Inc. of Rushville will be hosting its annual Bargain Days and Pancake & Sausage Day, with free door prizes for adults and kids.
Two men were honored by the Indiana Livestock Breeders Assoc. (ILBA) at its annual banquet at Purdue University. Gene Shaver, general manager of the Producers Marketing Assoc., Indianapolis, has been selected to be an honorary member of the ILBA and Shirley Whisman, Cicero, farmer and breeder of Belgian draft horses, was selected by the ILBA to become a member of its Hall of Fame at Purdue. Portraits of both will be hung in sections of the gallery at the Purdue Department of Animal Sciences.

By a two-thirds majority, the Kentucky Settlement Trust Corp. voted to base the 2001 Phase II tobacco payment on a three-year production average. The three years are 1998, 1999 and 2000. As a result of this decision, next year’s Phase II payments to growing farms, growers and tenants will be based on an average of effective quota and marketing’s from the three crop years.
Chad Wilson of Cloverdale, Ind., was named Herdsman of the Year at the annual herdsman banquet held at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. Each year the herdsman winner is elected by his or her peers.
