Ohio Sheep Assoc. awards scholarships
COLUMBUS, Ohio — During the Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium award program on Dec. 11, the Ohio Sheep Improvement Assoc. recognized four young people for receiving special recognition over the past year in the area of Sheep Production and Management.
Emily Shellhouse, of Delaware County was this year’s recipient of the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Award. Shellhouse was selected by the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Committee at the Ohio State Fair. She received a $1,000 scholarship and is attending The Ohio State University. The Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Award funds come primarily from the Silent Auction that is held during the Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium.
Isaac Kauffman, of Wayne County was this year’s recipient of the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Award. Kauffman was selected by the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Committee at the Ohio State Fair. He received a $500 scholarship and is attending The Ohio State University. The Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Award funds also come primarily from the Silent Auction that is held during the Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium.
Linsey Howell, of Knox County has been named as the State FFA State Sheep Proficiency award winner in 2010. Howell is attending The Ohio State University and is majoring in animal science. The Ohio Sheep Improvement Assoc. and the Ohio Sheep and Wool Program are the primary sponsors of the State FFA Sheep Proficiency Award.
Becca Goodman, of Fairfield County has been named as the 2010 State 4-H Sheep Achievement award winner. Goodman is attending The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI-Wooster) and is an animal sciences major.
Illinois junior beef exhibitor earns bronze, silver awards
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Kody Cassady, Mahomet, Ill., has earned the National Junior Angus Assoc.’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Robin Ruff, junior activities director of the American Angus Assoc. in Saint Joseph, Mo.
The 19-year-old son of Jerry Cassady attends the University of Illinois and is a member of the NJAA and the Illinois Junior Angus Assoc.
He has participated in local, state, regional and national shows and showmanship competitions. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Cassady participated in the photography, quiz bowl and judging contests as well as the mentoring program.
He has consigned cattle at the Focus on the Future sale and the PVF Annual Fall Online Spectacular.
The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.
The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide. |
