The proposed soil bank will cost up to $1 billion and could mean as much as $42 an acre to bank corn acreage and $24 an acre to bank wheat acreage, the Department of Ag told the U.S. Senate Ag committee.

The hog market slowed from the previous week at all major livestock markets, but some 170-240 butcher hogs sold for as high as $15.25-$15.50 at Indianapolis to reach the highest point since mid-October 1955. The cattle market saw a 10 percent reduction in receipts from the previous week at Indianapolis. Many choice steers at 975-1,075 pounds brought $20-$20.50 at Indianapolis.

The bill to repeal the 2-cents-a-gallon federal tax on gasoline used by farm vehicles was passed unanimously by the House of Representatives and sent to the Senate. The bill would save farmers about $60 million a year, according to most estimates.

Twelve gold medals for beef production were given out at the recent Henry County Gold Metal Banquet in Sulphur Springs, Ind.

Receiving gold medals were George Armstrong and sons, Berry and Meek families, Rex Brooks and family, Jack Cronk and sons, Russell Cronk and family, Tim Kendall, Jake Martin, K. Tom Martin, McFarland Angus, Charles Sparks Jr. and family, John W. Taylor and family and Charles W. Wilson and sons.
Secretary of Agriculture Clifford M. Hardin announced the formation of an Advisory Committee on Grains for wheat, feed grains and soybeans. Serving from Indiana on this board will be Sherman Kessler of New Ross and Laurel Meade from Fountain County.

Columbus man named Outstanding Indiana Young Farmer for 1971 – Harold Lloyd Jr., who operates a 635-acre grain and beef farm south of Columbus, was bestowed this honor during a banquet at Culver Military Academy campus. Runner-up was Kenneth L. Roberts, who farms near Kentland; second runner-up was R. Craig Leis, who farms near LaGrange.

Six foxes and a coyote were killed in the northeastern portion of Shelby County. The coyote was killed on the Paul Kaster farm in Marion Township.

President Reagan has nominated Richard Lyng to replace Secretary of Agriculture John Block. Lyng held the position of state agriculture director of California when Reagan was its governor.

 A fund to help destitute Indiana farm families has been established through the Indiana Council for Churches. Called the Emergency Farmer Assistance Fund, it will be used to help pay food, utilities, medical and clothing expenses.
Fifty-one thoroughbred horses perished in a barn fire at Sellersburg. The barn’s owner, Dr. Joe Millan, reported the loss could be “in excess of $1 million.” Eleven other horses were taken safely from the 400-foot-long barn.

Five Indiana agriculturists were honored for service to agriculture by the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Assoc. during the annual fish fry last month at West Lafayette.

Those honored were: Lawrence McKinney, Covington; Harry Armstrong, Springville; Russell Weaver, Vevay; Bruce McKenzie, Lafayette; and George Corya, Commiskey. David Miers, Greensburg, president of the association, presented the Certificates of Distinction.

The cumulative effect of a high natural gas prices could result in $3-per-bushel prices for both corn and soybeans if farmers follow through by shifting enough corn acres to soybeans this spring, said Allan Lines, Ohio State agricultural economist.

Kristi Wilson of Orleans was crowned the 2001 Indiana Angus Queen at the association’s annual meeting and banquet in Indianapolis.

More Sugar Added, a five-year-old mare owned by Terry and Kristy Hall of Franklin, Ohio, set a national season’s mark last year for a four-year-old mare on a half-mile track. Her record time of 1-minute-52.8-seconds was run at Maywood Race Track outside of Chicago.
